I heard a similar expression on some finance related motivational CD...If you want to get ahead in your personal financial life, look at and around your friends. Find new friends. Your 'worth' is the average of your friends. Well, I don't know how much of wealth my friends and good acquaintances have accumulated, but my salary range based on our professions indeed kind of falls in the middle. So, I hope it's similar with retirement savings. I need to sit in FIRE forum more, perhaps I'd become even wealthier

I hope it's the average, then, not the median: Some of my friends take home $2k a month, others $50k

Currently I make $0, so there's that too ..

What happens if you have no friends? do you become the avg of yourself? and if you're average to begin with you become the avg of the avg. Wow this is deep, I just hurt my brain

Someone once said: "The really rich people are the ones who rarely look it." Those folks are usually walking around in the same stuff the rest of us wear, because they have little interest in standing out.

Those "dressed to the nines" might be living on the largess of credit, and/or trying to impress everyone that they are someone they are not (or might not be).

Of course, I've never hung out with any Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, or Astors. But do remember hearing about John D. Rockefeller's quip when asked how much money was "enough":

"A little bit more."

Sorry for any misunderstanding, readers. I got distracted by the image of partiers at Eden Rock. I was not implying that anyone's ER posts on this forum are untrue or insincere.

I was just imagining a party at Jay Gatsby's.......... and am fairly certain no one here sells bootleg whiskey or illegal securities.

End of Q2 update:
Savings+investments are now at: $480k

I'm at 33% of my target retirement networth of $1.4M which is on the comfortable side and 48% of my $1M "can't do this crap anymore, I'm outta here" target. However, I'm also targeting college+marriage savings for DD to be $40k+$10k so the percentages drop.

Still three years ago (when I was 38 and not 41 ) when I started this thread I was at $240k so my networth doubled in exactly three years, I'll take it!

Looking ahead $500k could happen this year provided the market doesn't slip back too much.

Well folks with the recent (and probably temporary) run up in the market my investments+savings have finally reached the $500k milestone for the first time today I'm sure I'll cross it a few times in both directions but it's an important milestone for me- like a shade tree along a long, hot desert road

This run up has helped us to reach the same milestone! Congrats! Now I just hope it lasts.

Congratulations, dvalley! And just think. You have done this in only three years, you are only 41, AND you live in one of the most expensive states in the nation.

You should be proud............and DD grateful for such a conscientious dad!

dvalley, if you plan to put money back in the market , how will you know when to get back in? So hard to do.

Check out the Mr. Money Moustache

He may be too extreme for you, but invest some time reading his posts and see if you can use some of what he talks about. Good luck.
