I'm finally free
I have not posted here in a while because nothing changed. I work in a very stressful and toxic workplace. It has become much worse the last several years. Here's my story Dealing with toxic workplace - Early Retirement & Financial Independence Community. I can afford to FIRE but something was always holding me back. Some rational concerns but mostly irrational ones. No matter how much I disliked the place I just couldn't leave.
Well I just want to say I finally did it!! Gave my notice and in a few weeks I'm free!! The conversation with the boss went well. Can't say I was nervous but it was surreal like the words I was saying was in a dream. Best way I can describe it is if you're thirsty and you are moving toward a water fountain. It's just something you have to do. No regrets or second thoughts. Looking forward to what the future holds.

Congrats !!! Dont worry too much. Enjoy life. I got out of a toxic work environment last year. I was ready to call it quits, but found a job at the beginning of 2017. My coworkers now are great.

Good for you! I was also in a toxic workplace after my boss retired. One of the supervisors was called a "drive by shooter" as she would wander around sniping at us. In retaliation, we kept copies of her work input, and it was worse than any of ours!
I just grinned and bore it until mid January when my 7% profit sharing was posted to my 401K and pulled the plug! 
P.S At one time I was in a toxic marriage and my health suffered just like yours did. I also pulled the plug on that.

Congrats!
Your surreal conversation with the boss reminded me of the one I had last year with mine. I disliked the guy, but I still felt something like nervousness although I think it was more of my leaping off the cliff. Once I did it the sense of relief was awesome.

Congratulations! I'd love to hear about how you envision the first day after. Doesn't have to be a grand plan, just interested in how concrete you are making it - even if "I'm going to give the dog a really long walk and then a bath" take up your first morning!
Me, I have a manila envelope of some particularly awful memories - ones of "everything will fall apart," variety (no I haven't kept all, just a few) and I fully intend to shred them slowly. Depending on the weather, I'll do it early in the morning or later that night, but I will do it, particularly that very first crisis (not caused by me, but I had to figure it out and get out of it) back in 1990 - I've preserved my huge handwritten chart of all the issues - and, man, do I look forward to slowly shredding that thing!
I hope you will, or have already, made decisions and actions that have made your non-work life sane and beautiful!

I originally gave 12 months notice; but at month 8 I was at my wit's end. I'll never forget my boss's reaction when I asked if I could cut out early with just 4 weeks notice from that point. He smiled, said he couldn't blame me and let me out of the contract. Just like that.
He calls occasionally with a question and I always make time for him.

Reading your post prompted me to bring up my 2008 resignation letter. It was short and to the point. It was a surreal experience, telling my bosses (2 of 3 were present, the divisionhead was not back from a meeting) I was leaving. I just handed them my resignation letter. They weren't very stunned. That was over 8 years ago and I still get chills recalling those few minutes. Welcome to ER.

Retired in late 2008 at age 45. Cashed in company stock, bought a lot of shares in a big bond fund and am living nicely off its dividends. IRA, SS, and a pension await me at age 60 and later. No kids, no debts.
