From the last century...
Whew, finally figured out how to post a thread. This is the first forum I have ever visited, and a hearty hello to everyone
! I am 62, married, and self-employed. Right now we own two 10 acre ranches in California; both are paid for. We are building a house on one of the parcels. We invested our roth iras in the Vanguard TIPS fund and a Vanguard Intermediate treasury fund ($65,000 total). We have $40,000 in Vanguard's Total Stock Market, and $25,000 in FTSE All World--both are in taxable accounts. We own a farm-based (online sales) business, and I am the single employee; and make $24,000 per year salary. I plan to apply for social security when I turn 66 or 70, depending on our financial situation. My husband receives $1,300 per month from an inheritance. He is building the house. We do have an AARP long term health care policy. I plan to start a simple IRA as the business makes more money. We have a CD for $215,000 coming due later this month, and are wondering what to do with the $125,000+ that will be left when the house is finished. The stock market is rather scary lately, but people such as Bob Brinker see this as an investment opportunity. Does anybody have any ideas to keep us safe yet prosperous? We love our life, and really are living our dream, although it will be nice at some time to hop on aboard a slower train.... Sincerely, Antmary |

Welcome to cyberspace, AntMary.
Is the farm-based business based on ant farms?

Welcome to the board. Your first post came through perfectly.
A quick question: you mentioned that you have AARP long term care policy, but do you also have traditional health insurance? That's a huge factor for many early retirees.

Yes, we have a good (albeit expensive) Blue Cross policy.
Re: ants--actually, I have worked like an ant for most of my life; I had to make up for my grasshopper days.... Antmary |
