Minnesotan Looking For Friends

Hi,

What drove me here was looking for daytime friends to do fun things with who are close to my age(52) and in my area(south side of Twin Cities, metro area, MN).

I've been retired for 3 years and I'm starting to feel like something is missing. So I am looking for new friends and starting to create and invent again.

I've lost my closest friends in my area due to death, marriage, moving, etc.

I'm currently recovering from rotator cuff surgery so I am not able to do the active sports that I love. This has compounded my need at the moment.

Thanks for listening ............. Bill

Welcome, wildbilly.

Are you familiar with meetup.com groups? You might find some in your area that offer activities and friendship.

Welcome aboard. This place is always good for a laugh, or at least a smile. Stick around and you'll see.

Thanks Omni! I am very familiar with meetup groups. I even ran my own for awhile. The activities tend to be concentrated up north in the twin cities. I end up driving up there(40 minutes or so) a lot.

Thanks to you too Gumbi!

Hey Senator, I used to work at Lockheed Martin in Eagan. I also just went on my first cruise ever a month ago. Spent 3 days in Miami. I have some relatives and friends down in FL. You must be a snowbird. I love the winter when we get lots of snow which doesn't seem to be the case anymore though this season doesn't matter to me that much.

When you drove to work, you had to have driven right by my house. This is my first snowbird year, but plan on doing it more.

I'm also a 52 year old Minnesotan who RE'd two years ago. I moved 350 miles north to "the end of the road" but managed to stay in MN. Most people move south, I moved north. I knew when I RE'd that I'd be the only 50 year old around and I was right. I didn't know a person when I moved here and I'm not a real social person. I've managed to meet a lot of good friends in their 60's and 70's who also RE'd when they were in their 50's and understand. We are very active and go fishing all year around, we hunt, garden, cut our own wood and do what we want when we want. Retired Physician, educators, engineers, military officers, business owner (me)...you name it. We never talk work unless it involves a funny story from our past. Tuesday nights we get together for supper and cards, we shut it down at 8:00. Being 52 and able bodied I come in handy. I can climb ladders, lift heavy things and drive in the dark. I met most of my friends at church and volunteering at local service organizations. I enjoy a drink, but don't enjoy bars.

Anyway, I enjoy my new friends a lot but I do miss being with friends my own age. They're all working, I don't have any friends who plan on retiring before 67.

I get through the Twin City metro quite a bit and have many friends there. DS lives 40 miles S just off I-35. I just find that I am more comfortable in a smaller town, rural environment. Good luck to you, if you end up in northern MN I'm around, I might be fishing though.

Thanks for all the replies! Stormy, you sound like you have made your way pretty well. I do want to hit the boundary waters again some day. I should make it a priority this spring or fall. Paracelsus, congrats to you too. I drive up to the cities all the time for festivals, music, art and such. I'm headed to Shaws on the NE side of Minneapolis this Wed. with a friend I met thru meetup to see Harrison street if that's your gig. Enjoy all!

Take up home brewing. Find a club through the AHA. Endless brew sessions with interesting people. Here in NC we brew outdoors year round, but up there, only your all electric brewers will have brew sessions in the cold months, I suppose.
