I've spent the last year trying to figure out if I can retire. The financial planners all say "no problem". Of course, they have an agenda. The online calculators all say I can never retire. My company just offered me a nice severance package. I figured the only way to find out is to do it. I'll be 62 in a couple of months so we won't starve. Kids are out of college and the house is almost paid off. I'm excited about the future.

Well, that seems like a pretty pessimistic outlook. What's the difference between what you have and what FIRECalc would want to see?

My guess without knowing anything about you, is that you can afford to retire. The question would be will you enjoy it? That is a choice that you have to make. Hopefully you will love it!
