Teacher Counting Down

Don't tell my students, but I'm counting down.

I will have my 30 years done in 2 years, so I'll be officially retired as of July 1, 2021 if nothing changes. I'll be 57.

My district has had a disturbing habit of jerking around employees as soon as they become eligible for retirement so I am out on time. Retirement incentives have all but disappeared over the past 10 years I'd say, so that won't be happening. But I will be getting a nice pension.

As of now, DH (same age) is doing very well at work and loves it so is planning to do about 5 years longer than I am but we shall see.

Golden handcuffs have kept me in a ridiculously expensive area and I can't wait to finally be able to move. We're looking towards New England.

I've already learned a lot from the forum in the short time I've been here, so thanks for that!

Welcome aboard, Caramel. The young wife just retired after 30 years of teaching. It has been nice to see her not get more and more tense (and make a million trips to Staples) as the month of August comes to an end. We are going out to Yellowstone in September, which is when she will know that it is really, truly over.

My advice to you is to put your head down and just get it done. If you are like all the teachers I know, you'll be dedicated to your students to the bitter end. But when your administrators do something stupid, just say to yourself, "I'm out of here in two years; that's someone else's problem now."

Thank you for the encouragement Gumby. I hope your wife has a wonderful first September off!

Congratulations. DW taught 4th grade for many years. I wondered how she would merge into retirement. I had nothing to worry about, she snapped right into retirement. No more report cards or parent conferences, yea!

Nose to the grindstone. Hope your time flies by quickly till you reach the other side of working! Look forward to hearing how your retirement starts in a year or more. Good luck with it all.
