None of this stuff is the real reason you don't go to car dealerships. It's because you'd never buy a new car.

Carl G- Have you spoken with the company that financed the vehicle?
I know that with some mortgages for example- you have to specify that the extra amount will go to principle, or it will just be taken as your next months payment.
I would just give them a call. They may not have been any underhandedness at all.

I think Virginia is right. You have to write on the bill and check (apply to principal) or they will not do it. Best to call and ask for their directions.

I have called the financial office of the lender and arranged for the payments to be made automatically, with the extra going straight to principle.

I guess the guy at the dealership just did not know what he was talking about??!
