Some car manuals (and warranties) require an oil change at 3000 miles under "severe" driving conditions. Severe driving isn't necessarily defined as towing a trailer up Pike's Peak--it could just be driving on a dirt road/driveway occassionally or doing most of your driving in short trips.

Changing oil frequently also removes acids and very fine particles that filters don't remove.

I change the oil at 3K to 4K (which works out to about 3 4 mos). It's cheap insurance. Castrol or other name-brand conventional oil most of the year, semi-synthetic in winter for the better flow characteristics in cool weather. Good filters (Purolator if I can get 'em cheap, no Fram)

I had heard that Castrol had lots of 'parafin' (?) or something... but it would put a bunch of gunk in your head covers... I don't use it if I can help it...

Wow!

Calling the "3,000 miles" voters. Are you sure you use 100% synthetic oil? This is what this poll is about. ONLY FOR SYNTHETIC OIL. Not regular, not blended.

Severe conditions, again the report from consumers mag and NYC taxis are about as severe as you can get. 7,500 is still giving you very good protection. Look My experiences over the years. 1990 Volvo 240, changed the oil every 7 to 10 K. Can went 265,000 with no problems, heck still had the original clutch.

Many other vehicles that all had well over 100K miles on them and never did a 3000 mile oil change.

Never had an engine problem.

Same here. Approaching 100,000 miles -- runs like it's brand new!

Re: 100% Synthetic oil - change frequency

GM has had a program buit into to some of their cars (those equipped with a driver information center) that will calculate when regular oil is due to be changed. GM does not have it calibrated for Syn oil.
I have two GM products with this feature and change oil when the computer says to. Sure hacks off the dealer when he tries to sell a LOF job when the rig is in for a recall or warrenty work .

Re: 100% Synthetic oil - change frequency

my partner works in service for cars and we change ours every 5-7k miles...3 is excessive. if the car is older he does recommend staying closer to the 3-5k range.
