My smarty pants hubby just pointed out that Mayans didn't live in NZ so we still have a few hours to go before we get to test the calendar theory.

My friend in Australia is still alive. Life is good. And if the Maya had been able to predict the end of the world, they certainly would have taken into account time zones.

Although the Mayans didn't have railroads, the operators of which were the primary drivers for time zones, and "standard" time.

The Mayans were awesome engineers. Maybe they were train engineers too.

A pretty limited engineering repertoire though, without the wheel.
Yes, I know they knew about wheels (used them in toys for kids) but I don't think they ever used the wheel in a practical sense.

You're telling us as a culture, they weren't well rounded?

I wonder, do people that take an end of the world scenario seriously keep on doing it? Did the folks that believed the Harold Camping end of the world prediction for May 21, 2011 just moved right on over to the Mayan end of the world 12/21/12 or is it different folks?

ejman,
I suspect that many of them might be the same people.
I remember reading about something in the psychology (I can't recall the term) of the people who espouse an extreme view (such as the world ending on 12/21) .....that when that event does NOT happen, they actually become even more fervent about that event happening....just at a different time out in the future. (Sort of believing that THEN they can say, "See, I told you so.")

I dunno, but as long as they don't decide to try to take other people with them into the great beyond, I will be a happy camper.

The winter solstice (end of year) doesn't occur until 21 Dec 11:12 UTC which corresponds to 5:12 am CST (UTC-6). Just to be a bit more precise. We have just under 5 hours left.......
December solstice 2012: 21 Dec 11:12 (UTC)
(So, if the sun still rises here in the US, I think we're OK )

If we're now rats, maybe the world as we knew it did end.
