60: The New 45

http://health.yahoo.com/news/166007

I found this little tidbit particularly interesting:

"Drugs such as Viagra, Cialis and Levitra have even given a boost to aging Americans' sex lives. One recent U.S.-European study found men in their 50s were now happier with their sex lives than men in their 30s. In another survey, conducted in 1998, 43 percent of both men and women over 60 said sex was as good for them now as it was in their youth."

Is it because the kids are finally out of the house? :P

When ppl ask me what I'm going to do when I RE I give them my version of this....

"Especially if they have financial independence, they're going to retire from whatever boring job they have and do what they want to do for the next 20, 30 years."

Provided you've kept your health (and thus not given it away to your employer through long hours and brutal work/travel conditions), I don't see why you can't enjoy a few decades before old age catches up to you. This is why financial independence and retiring early are so critical. While it's great to discover your passion early on in life, the chances of doing so are pretty slim. Even if you do, your passion probably won't pay all that well. The next best thing to finding your passion (and getting paid well for it) is a well-paying job that doesn't suck (at least not that bad). Once you've achieved financial independence, you won't care that your passion can't pay the bills.

Re: 60: The New 45

I found that out early in life, the thing I enjoyed doing the most couldn't pay the bills, I shelved that passion but now with FIRE on the not so distant horizion I'm starting to investigate what it would take to get back to that enjoyment.

Eh, I wouldn't worry about it.

Below a certain adolescent age-- door locks.

Past a certain adolescent age-- if they happen to pick the lock and stumble upon the scene, then for the rest of their lives they'll go to great pains never to interrupt again.

Of course in rooms without locking doors or in the great outdoors... well, you're on your own. I'd worry if the kids display a sudden new interest in Google Earth.

Two careers, working 50+ hours each, trying to fit in everything else even minus kids, doesn't leave much time for romance.* *Things improve when you get the time back.*
