Accidently discovered this a few years ago. The theme to "I Dream of Jeanie" is a perfect mind eraser. It actually gets rid of persistant song melodies and lyrics and then fades away on its own.
I came to a similar conclusion! The key is to use some song which was stuck in your head at some point in the past (for me it's "The Bird Song"). You substitute that one for the one that's stuck, and, because you've already vanquished the old one, it fades away.

Mother of God, there is a song worse than William Shatner's rendition of "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds"
