Afternoon Musings
My wife and I were watching the kids come home today and we wondered - why didn't we have backpacks in our day? It was a pain carrying notebooks/textbooks/folders while walking home. If you dropped a book all your papers fell out. Growing up in MN gloves weren't effective holding books so you carried with your bare hands. A favorite trick was to pull or hit someone's arm making them drop their books. We couldn't think of any good reason it took so long to become common. Was it because of computers? Did you have a backpack?

Not computers. Backpacks become pretty common before most people had a laptop.

Same here.
And we had computers hanging from our belt.
Well, analog computers.
Sort of.
They were called slide rules.

I meant to say the first time I encountered backpacks were in college late 60's. I don't remember any in high school. Speaking of computers I had the first computer programming class my high school offered. It was a big box of punched cards. You picked out the cards and submitted them to be read. Maybe a few days later you got the results back. College wasn't much better. You had to type/punch your own cards and submit them to be run.

It never occurred to us to get a backpack for our books so we carried them in our arms the old fashioned way. Of course since we didnt have backpacks you had to run to your locker to switch out your morning books for your afternoon books.

I must be an outlier. Had a backpack (Army green canvas) as early as 1958 for my books. Took it to summer camp too...they called it "the green thing" IIRC.

I had a backpack from year 6 through 12. No homework before that.

I had a book satchel similar to these. I was very un-cool in grade school

Yes, me too! By high school though I thought it was uncool to use anything to carry books—but there was a “Can I carry your books?” flirting thing that was fun.

That's what I had. It was leather, but not high quality. The cow hide was thick and tough.

And we wrote with ink pens, which we dipped in ink wells.
Children's fingers were always stained with ink. And they often spilled ink on their clothes.

No back packs. We weren't very bright.
Honestly, I don't think we had half the homework in Elementary School as my kids did. So maybe only had to bring one or two books home an evening.

+1.
I also got kicked out of high school just prior to finals for the offense of smoking in the library. I never set foot in the school library. Definitely smoked. Ended up getting a GED. But nope, no backpack. That came later for free; compliments of the US Army.
