Interesting, although not all that far from how Barristers were hired by solicitors in England. The solicitor would put the brief together and "shop it around" to appropriate barristers for the best deal

Thanks for that - a good perspective for those who bemoan the current state of affairs and cry for a return to the (often romanticized) 'good old days'.
