Our bird feeder was unused while we were away snowbirding. So we loaded it up 2 weeks ago. Still no action. Yesterday, starlings discovered it (on the top 19th floor) and now all kinds of birds are visiting again. (Purron's story reminded me to relate it here.)

I have a lot of hawks around here, if I threw a rock into the air I may hit one! Yet I have no idea what they eat because there are too many squirrels and mice here. I shot a couple of squirrels and put them out for the hawks and they never touched them! Crows pecked at them a bit then gave up.

Every year in January and February, our feeders get popular with starlings and grackles. My trusty pellet pistol is kept near a nearby window, so they never hang around long, and there is a hawk who immediately swoops in for take-out dinner when she hears the sound of the pistol. In fact, I have seen her grab the dead or wounded starling at about the instant it hits the ground on more than one occasion.

DW hates starlings as much as I do, so she always asks if I fed the hawk today.

The other ten months of the year, our feeders are safe for the desirable birds, but I get to practice my marksmanship every winter.

Around here they are partial to other birds. They seem to be easier for them to catch.

Sometime in the late 1990s I was at Buckskin Mountain State Park in AZ, standing outside talking on a payphone which was adjacent to an old display gas pump........I guess the sparrows felt safe, close to a building, near people, etc.......as I was talking, and less than 5' from where I stood, a red-tailed hawk swooped in and took a sparrow right off the top of the pump.

RIP Tootsie. What a beautiful kitty! It's just never easy. They always take a piece of our hearts.

And wow - almost 21 years old! Gives me hope for a few more years with my 17 year old Molly.

Oh bless your heart, always sad to hear of a good kitty's passing. Take comfort in knowing she had a long and happy life with you.

Thanks everyone...

Even though she was tiny and her meowing was of a delicate nature, the house seems so quiet and empty. I imagine I'll be 'seeing and hearing' her for months to come.

Due to various circumstances, we decided she would be our last pet.

But you know, we've been blessed with the best for many years. For that, I am grateful.

It's been a couple of weeks since my kitty passed and I thought I saw her out of the corner of my eye today.
