Anyone have an Ipad 4 (with retina display)?

I have an iPad 1, that is getting a little long in tooth on battery and power. I just read today in a Target flyer they appear to be offering a good deal. You can trade in the original iPad and get $200 trade in plus a $40 Target gift card off of the reduced selling price of $449. So altogether it would only cost me $200 to get a new one. Seems like a good deal since a refurbished one is over $375 on Apple store. I guess I could get the Air for $250, but I am cheap. So the question I'm trying to ask is the processing speed for Internet access much faster on the 4 than the original one?

I have an IPad 3 with retina display and the Internet speed up was noticeable over my iPad 1, so the iPad 4 should be even better.

And the display is awesome.

I can't speak to speed between a 1 and a 4, we have a 2 and a 4, and the internet access speed isn't noticeable to us.

FWIW the difference in display between the 1/2 and the 4 is noticeable when you hold them side by side (viewing the same page). But we can't "see" the difference when they're not side by side - the display on the 1/2 is awesome, the retina display is awesomer (I wouldn't trade up for the display alone - OMMV).

Worth the upgrade

Absolutely love it! Much improvement over ipad 1. Time to upgrade for you. The target deal sounds great.

Thanks Audrey. I haven't tried a newer one and I don't want to drive 60 miles to play with one at an Apple Store. Target is nearby but you can't access them to use at the store.

Thanks everyone! Seraphim if you are interested in this you can go to Targettradeinprogram.com . There you can go and see which nearby store is involved with this program. It seemed like most every Target nearby here is participating. I noticed you could out right sell it to them for $60, but hat makes little sense when you can use it trade it in for $200. Since it said minimum $200 trade in, I was assuming that was for the 1 version, and the others would provide a better trade in value. Looks like I will be going to Target this week!

How odd...I just got an email from Best Buy to trade in your IPad for the new Air. They are offering $95 for an iPad 1 trade in. Hmmm, I think I will pass and go to Target.

An article explaining it. It appears through this article this program is only good for a few more days. The article said the IPad Air is available through this also and is discounted to $479 so it can be had for $279.

Just remember that if you have an older model with a case, cover or similar paraphernalia, the old case won't fit on the newer version.

I just heard the other day that these items are the real profit centers.

Good deal, though.

My older son has an iPad with the retina screen. It's stunning. Like someone else said, I'm just fine with my iPad mini non retina screen, but I really notice the difference when I see my son's iPad with the retina screen.

Depends what you mean. I doubt that the actual speed of the data transfer is much different (and probably more dependent on your router & ISP). However, I would bet that the new device is faster at taking the info and getting it displayed on the screen. That's where the power is needed, and often what we perceive in terms of 'speed'.

Think about it this way - your router can supply several devices at the same time, and it doesn't have a very powerful processor, you get the whole thing for about $50.

I have an iPad 4. I went to the Apple store this weekend to check out the iPad Air. I couldn't quite justify the delta in price between the trade in of my 4 and the new cost of an Air. However, if I had an older iPad (1/2), and I was thinking about upgrading, I wouldn't even remotely consider the 4 at this point if the savings was only $50. The new Air is substantially lighter, faster, and more enjoyable to use. Buying the Air today will ensure at least an additional year of usage before you begin to feel it's getting old and outdated. And the reduction in weight and thickness is very noticeable after you have been holding it for a while.

This is not an area to be cheap over $50. If you're going to spend the money, just get the new Air model and be happy that you have the current version and will likely get 2-3 years of usage out of it before you think about the next upgrade.

Ya, the more I think about it the more I think I will cough up the extra few bucks....the ad didn't directly mention the Air, and was highlighting the 4 model. But after checking into it and finding that they can be bought on the trade in and they are also $20 reduced from normal $499 price, I am leaning that way.

ERD, you figured out my definition of speed. Nobody with computer technical expertise would ever want to waste their time talking with me! I only have mid level DSL capability. I have a Chromebook that is way faster downloading Internet info than my tired old iPad does. If the new one is as fast as Chromebook I will be pleased. I can't complain about my iPad 1. I bet I have averaged 5 hours a day on it the last 3 years and it never has caused me a problem. It will act squirrelly every now and then with the email, but the problem has always resolved itself somehow. Before IPads I was on my laptop maybe an hour a day tops. Now I seem to be on it when I am doing other things and watching tv.

I am using one now ( ipad 4) and my wife has the original and the new air, plus my son has an iPad 2.

The 4 and the air have noticeably sharper displays than the 1 or 2 non retina. The iPad 1, 2 and 4 seem to surf the web on the home wifi at about the same speed, but the new iPad air is noticeably faster.

I have a 2 with retina and like it. But I have read a lot of tech reviews that argue that the mini - particularly the new mini with retina display is the better option. They argue that the display is fine for the types of things iPad users use the tablet for and better for reading, travel, holding, etc. When I upgrade I plan to give it a close look.

DW is retiring her iPad 1(!) and so will be getting a new iPad Air for Christmas. My old iPad 2 is still good enough for now (I suppose ...), so I'll hold out for next year's model.
