I am physically active on a regular basis, and I love being outdoors. I've been thinking about getting one of those scooters to add to my retinue of outdoor activities. One consideration is getting a pair of electric scooters for me and DW. But then I'm also thinking about just a kick scooter.
DW will not use a kick, scooter, BTW. Here are my questions:
1) Can an electric scooter be used just like a kick scooter (or is there some residual resistance to the free movement of the wheels)?
2) DW and I are both cyclists. Is balancing on a scooter difficult?
3) Are electric scooters worth it? In other words, are they reasonably reliable?
4) Any questions I should have asked, but didn't?

I haven't seen one where the handle bar came up anywhere close to a comfortable height when standing on the platform.
I'll stick to bikes with better brakes.

Do you mean something like this?

I haven't ridden either type but have been curious about them.

Yes. You should have asked "Should I buy a helmet?"

Glad you asked. Get a Snell-certified helmet: https://www.smf.org/helmetguide

Most definitely we would wear helmets. And also elbow pads. I was thinking more like one of these types of 2-wheel scooters:

Or kick scooter like this:

Most definitely we would wear helmets. ...
Good. I strongly encourage you to research and understand the Snell Foundation and the value of its certification. All helmets are not created equal; not even close.

I have ridden motorcycles (cruisers) for a number of years and feel quite comfortable and balanced on them especially after I make a few adjustments to lower the center of gravity a bit and make the seat position more comfortable for my back and legs. However, scooters make me nervous with their sitting and leg positions and higher center of gravity. I won't ride one. For me they are too dangerous. Go figure.

A least get a good helmet and shoes to wear while riding. A good aftermarket air horn is a plus too. Something like this ... https://wolo-mfg.com/horns/air-horns.html

Cheers!

Look in to Segway if all you care is mobility. Very intuitive to ride.

just to clarify, see my links on post # 5 as to what types I am considering, purely for recreation and another excuse to stay outdoors.

OK, scooter it is! My experience with scooters is that they are not like bicycle at all. They feel funny and scary when turning but they are fun once you get a hang of them. I have tried both regular scooter and motorized. It is much easier to get over the learning curve on the regular scooter but it would be very hard to find a adult size regular scooter. Segway company is my favorite so I would definitely go with your first link: Segway ES 2.

What about one of these?
