Are Certified Pre-Owned vehicles worth more?

In 2005 we bought a CPO 2003 Camry (32,000 miles) from the Toyota dealer. I remember that I did negotiate the price a little but even then, I knew that getting a CPO was probably more expensive than buying the same car from another used car dealer.

The warranty for it being CPO paid off when a few years later they spotted a leaking water pump and replaced that for no charge.

We still have this car. After 13 years it has 85,000 miles and runs very well. We just put new tires on it. The past few years it's need age related things like a starter and some emissions things.

Our lives and our finances are very different now than they were in 2005. I don't know if I'd shop for a Certified Pre-Owned car again but this one has been a gem.

We are on our second car and both came with a extended warranty. Both cars have been excellent.

I bought a used car last year. As one would expect, CPO offerings of the same make/model/options were noticeably higher than non CPO versions. In order to be CPO, you are buying from the OEM dealer, that is buying a used Ford from a Ford dealership, a used Audi from the Audi dealer etc. Sometimes that brings a slightly higher price to start with.

I ended up with a great deal on my 1-owner car from CarMax and bought a "Ford" Factory Extended Warranty from an online Ford dealership for less than dealers were asking for the CPO with a factory warranty. Ignoring the ext warranty vs non warranty discussion, I have the same, or better coverage as a CPO vehicle.

We recently bought a CPO vehicle that had 6600 miles on it. It had been a loaner car for their service department. It was listed for about $24k and we knocked about another $4k off of that. It has all the latest safety equipment that we wanted because it was for our son’s family that had twins last June. It has a ten year power train warranty along with the remaining full warranty. We think it was a pretty good deal.
