Re: Are You Right Or Left-Handed

Help me out with this one... I was always under the impression that the gene that determines if you are left handed is recessive. So if both of your parents are left handed, then all the kids should be left handed, right? ll x ll = ll

My mom and dad are both left handed, but all 3 kids are right handed. So are we adopted, genetic mutants, or am I wrong about the recessive gene?

In some parts of the world, the right hand is for eating, writing, handing food to others, etc.

The left hand is for the lower bodily functions.

I could reply with righteous indignation, but that would be gauche.

Looks like the percentage numbers are debatable. This Left-Handed Forum reports numbers as high as 30% and even quotes a small, statistically insignificant survey where the results were remarkably similar to ours:

Righty 41 = 66%
Lefty 15 = 24%
Ambidextrous 6 = 9%

When I was teaching there would always be 3 or 4 in a class. Sometimes more but never less.

And that wasn't counting me.

Re: Are You Right Or Left-Handed

When I was in elementary school, the nuns used to slap my left hand with a ruler whenever they caught me writing with it. At the time there was supposed to be some great disadvantage resulting from being left-handed but I haven't figured out what it was. With my left hand, I could get an A+ on penmanship (they don't teach that anymore). With my right hand, I could only get an A-. I was amidextrous until high school when I finally got out of practice with my right hand. I can still write right-handed better than most people.

I blame the nuns for my anti-authority attitudes but it's possible I came by it naturally.
