Re: atm's suck
I withdrew $100 from an ATM, it only gave me $80, I called the bank, they did the investigation and gave me the credit to my account. They will be able to tell when they reconcile the machine and it comes up over what it should have.

Re: atm's suck
While my wife and I were in the Bank of America branch getting our signatures guarenteed for our trusts we overheard the ATM technician explaining a problem with their ATM to the branch manager. It seems the ATM was a new kind that scans the deposit when it takes it in. Apparently the rollers that sucked in the deposit were sticky and the ATM was spitting out what ever had been deposited last to each new depositee. Only a few people had complained about getting extra free cash.
I resolved never to deposit cash into an ATM.

Re: atm's suck
I only use the ATM about once a month or so as my spending is about 99% credit card or debit card. I have never made a depost via the ATM but I would be reluctant to dump a bunch of my cash into a box and hope that it would all be properly credited to my account. I guess Mike D. agrees with me.

Re: atm's suck
Math,
That has happened a lot here in Panama. My mom used her B of A card at a HSBC atm and the machine said it was unable to complete the transaction. When she got home and logged onto her account they had withdrawn the money even though she did not recieve it. She called HSBC and they said she needed to call her bank to fix it. That advise seemed strange considering it was their atm that took the money. Well, she contacted B of A and they corrected the mistake within a few days.
That scenario would suck if you tried to take out your $500 for an emergency. That happened to my cousin here and it took them 2 weeks to fix it.

Re: atm's suck
I rarely use ATMs but when I did I have never had a problem. When I went to Thailand last year, I had to depend on them for my room and board and again had no problems. Now I am going to Thailand this November and other bordering countries for at least 6 months and hope my positive ATM experience continues. To play it safe, I will only use ATMs at banks while they are still open, no 7 eleven or weekend withdrawals for me. I hate to have my debit card get swallowed by a machine with noone to retrieve it for me.

Are you actually armed when you do it? Or do you just fake it by putting your hand in your jacket pocket so it looks like you have a gun?

Re: atm's suck
I deposit cash frequently into my local ATM. Occasionally $1000's at a time. Just flash the amount of cash in front of the camera before you put it into the envelope. That way the camera won't lie later, unless they "lose" the surveillance footage from the ATM. I figure I can negotiate my money back into my account if needed at a later date.
My ATM deposit goes into a sealed envelope, then into a lockbox in the ATM. No dispensing mechanisms exist to get a deposit back out of the ATM. There's no guarantee that a crooked bank teller wouldn't rip you off at the bank.
Out of hundreds of deposits that I have made at the ATM, I have never had a problem.

My bank's ATM counts the cash you give it, and then tells you how much it thinks you put in for verification. If you think it counted wrong, you can cancel the deposit. Have never needed to cancel, though. Some of the ATMs take coins, as well.

You might want to check on the bank's policy first. I had my card eaten by and ATM at a bank branch (my bank) while it was still open. Went in to get them to retrieve it for me. The said they can't do it, they have to wait for the "armored car" guys who work on the ATMs to come out and get it. I ordered a new one that was mailed to me and the "eaten" one was destroyed after the "armored car" guys finally came out to work on the machine.

My bank does not have any branch overseas so I will be withdrawing the cash from local banks with ATMs so bank policy wont help unless I do my homework and only withdraw from banks with policies that will be helpful to me. I plan to take 3 different debit cards.
