Re: Bad year for electronics...

Oh I know, service is dead. Dead, dead, dead.

How you can run a big biz selling to home users and think its a good decision to not staff your customer service lines on weekends is a little bit of a stretch though.

Based on the conversation I had with the dell rep this morning, it sounds like it had the wrong description and shouldnt have come with the ati graphics. The price I got WAS awful low. I saw an exact duplicate of the system I bought priced in the 1400's yesterday.

I'm sure they will. Often they'll upgrade you to the next best platform when they screw up, but since I already got a GREAT deal on this one, I doubt they'll do more than simply send me the same box with the ati graphics instead of the integrated. I get to "clean" the old one of my apps and data and then reload. Joy :P

Re: Bad year for electronics...

Maybe you can get dell to comp you $75 or so. I think that is a pretty common practice for them. Then keep your current Dell laptop and you won't have to reload all your apps on the new machine. Unless you need the graphics card for something, like gaming!

Re: Bad year for electronics...

I was hoping to use this to replace both my old laptop and my old desktop, and yes, I play games now and then. After looking at the benchmarks some more, the performance on the integrated graphics is worse than I thought. One third to one tenth the speed of the weakest ATI offerings in some apps. Although on some apps I dont use like the sims the integrated is actually faster. But not by much.

On another front, buying the bluetooth cell phone is also turning into a travesty. I had noted that the order I placed didnt show up, and then realized I hadnt gotten a confirmation email. On calling them, the original order appears to have "gotten stuck, weird, dont know what happened...I'll enter another order for you". We go through that, of course he cant give me free upgraded shipping because I've been waiting a week for it.

This morning I get two confirmation emails, one for the week-old order and the other for the new one. Of course they cant cancel an order, even if its unshipped. So when I receive two, I send one back and then argue with them about the shipping costs.

So now you not only dont get good customer service, you cant even successfully buy something without a problem.

I'm just never buying anything other than food ever again.

Your wife may want a new Lexus SUV in a few months when her "old" one gets a little dust on it. You better not swear off buying non-food items just yet.

"Here Gabe, here's $10 bucks. Go make mommy's car look like new again. Yes, the usual, wax, wash, vacuum, and wipe down the interior. Don't forget to clean the windows."

After all, he'll be driving it one day, so he ought to clean it, right?

That's only $8.13 in today's dollars. Assuming 3% inflation, a couple of hedonistic adjustments, and Gabe will wash cars 7 years from now.

Well Shirley, I think I may have to go with one of two arguments "We wouldnt have the car if we hadnt had you, we'd still be driving around in the expedition with a back seat full of dogs" or "Most of that stuff caked on the seats came out of you, so get your paper towels out mister..."

Sarcasm is great. Of course I wouldnt force my child into some form of labor.

Rookie.

$10 is the going rate at our house for a wash & vacuum. Of course now I can tell her that in just three years the Taurus wagon will be hers so she'd better take care of it.

I'm lying. Come on, my lips were moving.

He already shows a great fascination with the vacuum cleaner. One of his favorite things is sitting in the baby bjorn hanging off of me while I vacuum the house. Yes I have a picture. No, you have no chance of me posting it.

Re: Bad year for electronics...

Well its four thumbs down for Dell and this system is being returned for credit. Last time I'll buy a dell product.

After navigating numerous phone system hell lines, I was disconnected twice while reading order numbers or giving my phone number. The third time I gave my phone number for a return call and explained that I had been hung up on. The guy said there was absolutely no way I could get a replacement with the right parts in it, that i would have to return the system and then find and order a new one from the outlet. I asked for a supervisor and was put on hold for 15 minutes and then disconnected.

I finally got through to a customer care specialist who said she had 'broad powers'. Unfortunately she confirmed that they had no way to exchange a system and upgrade anything. It would be the same configuration as what I have now. No offers of any upgrade to make up for the mess, no offers of any discount to keep the machine I have.

She offered me one other option. To send me back to the people who kept disconnecting me (sounded like another country, probably something wrong with their phone line interconnect), and she said if I mentioned things like better business bureau or attorney generals office, I might eventually get escalated to the executive office, who might send me what I actually bought.

I decided that waiting all weekend for customer care to be in the office, spending an hour on the phone fruitlessly, and already having wasted several days loading this system with apps and data was all the time I was going to spend. It sounded like if I was willing to spend an hour threatening people I might just get what I originally bought. <GONG>

UPS will come by to pick it up tomorrow, at least there is no dollar cost to me at all.

What a complete and total waste of time, and a tour de force example of how completely horrifying customer service has become.

I officially retract every Dell recommendation I've ever made. :P

Re: Bad year for electronics...

If it makes you feel any better, I stole a screwdriver from dell when they sent me a replacement keyboard for my laptop. I had to return the defective keyboard to them in their return mailer, but I "accidentally" kept their screwdriver. It had a pocket clip on it, so I couldn't bear to part with it. That'll show them. Maybe you should inadvertently forget by accident to return select parts of the laptop - like the cord or the office/windows CD's or something equally obnoxious. 8) Then lie your ass off when they try to get them from you. Claim they never shipped with the system or something. Stick it to the man!!!!

Bummer. Dell started focusing on margins about six months ago, and they've really cracked down on customer service generosity. They used to give you $100 in free stuff if you sneezed. Sounds like they've become pretty nasty.

Re: Bad year for electronics...

Wish I was asking for something 'generous'. Asking to have what I bought and paid for shipped to me at no additional cost didnt seem to be asking a lot. Obviously the system description was a mistake. Equally obvious is that they have no intent to make it right. Seems vaguely illegal to send someone something other than what they bought and the only remedy is to send it back and get a refund, but then again i'm not a lawyer. And dont care!

Re: Bad year for electronics...

DWís been wanting a laptop to call her very own, mostly for email and surfing the net. Iíve been following the rabbit trail on this thread (bits of fur strewn all over, in case you havenít noticed) and considering buying a Dell from their outlet. Friday I saw a message on FatWallet.com that Best Buy was going to offer a cheapie Toshiba as their loss leader on Sunday. The price was going to be $400 or $450, depending on the region the store was located in.

The FatWallet message: http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/mess...hreadid=576796
was posted at about 2:30 on Friday, kicking off what can only be called a feeding frenzy. People were figuring all sorts of ways to purchase multiple units, buying online for in-store pickup on Sunday when the price would be lowered from $700 to $400 or $450. Lots of discussion of Best Buy price matching policies and how to get the $400 price in regions where the ad said $450. The goal was to score as many as possible at the $400 price and resell them on eBay.

I followed the thread on the message board all weekend and it was a little like watching a war via email. The battle was first fought electronically as ways were discovered to get around Best Buysí online system and place an order for online pickup even though it looked like BB had tried to disable the in-store pickup option sometime Saturday afternoon. On Sunday, skirmishes broke out in Best Buy stores all over America, and were dutifully reported back on the FatWallet forum. There were stories of individual tragedy (they were sold out even though I had reserved three online!) and individual triumph (I got four of them, showed an add from another region and they sold them to me for $400 instead of the $450 price in the local paper!). The number of posted messages on the thread is astounding, growing to 55 pages at last count.

Meanwhile, the number of new Toshiba Satellite L25-S1216 notebook computers on eBay grew from three on Friday to over 200 last time I checked. Free enterprise at itís best.

Oh yeah. I got one...but only one.

Re: Bad year for electronics...

Yeah I saw that debacle. Did you see the idiot who listed about a dozen of them on ebay with a buy-it-now option, and he was so excited with his efforts that he forgot to change the buy it now price from .99c, and all of them sold at that price?

Whoopsie.

I really, really, really hate it when people see a 'hot deal' and go down to the store and purchase the entire inventory to sell on ebay. Makes me not want to bother posting one when I find it. You're not really helping out regular people who just want to get a good deal on something.

It was very entertaining to read about the weasels who "fooled" the web site and then got into screaming matches with the store manager when the systems werent there.

So its back to the desktop with the 32" screen and the 6 year old stinkpad with the dead battery and the flakey screen. For the time being.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot. After I wiped the hard drive, I put a password on the drive.

Maybe they have a way to overcome that without knowing what the password is.

I'm hoping they have to call me to get it.

"Hold on a minute, I have to go get the baby...be right back with you". Put 'em on hold for 10-15 minutes, then hang up on 'em. Rinse and repeat.
