Air Force Pilot, Real Estate Appraiser, Computer Programmer, MIS Director, RETIRED! The last one may fit 1 and 3!

1. Pounding spikes on the railway. Lived in boxcars, worked 12 hours a day, food stored in boxcar of ice at 90F
2. 2nd place: S-Ox compliance:

• 1st year - keep CEO & CFO out of jail, no budget-blank check, atta-boy & big bonus at end,
• next year - ho hum more of same,
• 3rd year - can't we do this with fewer resources?,
• 4th year - ER

Never really new: doctor at one time, not a farmer

4. what did you end up doing for a living?
Mainly Computer tech support and management in that field

1st: Fire Management Officer with federal land management agency.
2nd: Logging Engineer with the feds (in western Oregon).

2. what was your worst j*b ever?
Night shift at a cannery (various jobs but worst was cleaning the machinery).

Something related to natural resources.

4. what did you end up doing for a living?
Forester/Engineer with a federal agency -- had various jobs over the years and lived all over the country (Timber Sale Forester, District Ranger, Forest Planner, Logging Engineer, Fire Management Officer).

1. What was your best j*b?
part-time pizza delivery driver near a university. You'd be surprised how much(or how little) clothing some 19 year old girls would be wearing when they came to the door to get their pizza at 1am and I actually got paid pretty well. I left with over $100 in my pocket and a free pizza many a night.

2. What was your worst j*b?
warehouse sorter. heavy lifting for $8/hr. Only lasted a couple weeks.

3. What did I really want to do?
Something to do with numbers. Math teacher, accountant, finacial advisor...

4. What did I end up doing?
Started out as a material handler(2yrs) then moved to a slitting machine operator(5 yrs) for more money then moved back to material handler(2yrs...) because I knew I couldn't lift 10,000lbs+ per shift for 25+ years. So i'm now a material handler and probably will be doing the same thing for the rest of my career 15-25 yrs. I'm 29 so that's pretty optomistic. Could be >25 yrs.

To expand on what Rustic & REW have already emphasized:

1. Navy submariner.

3. Navy submariner. My dad still has my sixth-grade drawing of a nuclear reactor and he's holding out for the highest bidder.
4. Navy submariner. And I certainly wasn't in the mood to seek further employment.

Replace Nords' entries with electrical/electronic engineer, then you got my answers. I have had summer jobs, but they are neither the worse, nor the best. Only my real professional work was the one that hit both top and bottom.

In any job I have had, it was always fun for the first few years, when I learned something new. Then, it became old hat, and the bureaucracy BS started to wear you down, and the technical challenge was gone.

The advantage of my job over others is that I can still do some of my work part-time and moonlighting. Helps pay the bill, particularly during market bear like this.

1. Best job ever: Statistics and environmental health instructor for a university. Loved it so much I didn't spare any time for my thesis and almost missed the graduation deadline.

2. Worst job ever: Worked as a project manager at a major research institution with three bosses, all of whom wanted different things and none of whom had communication styles compatible with me. Very stressful to never know what, exactly, they wanted, when or how. I was also creating the job so had nobody to show me what to do. Ended up vomiting most mornings before work; finally quit to go back to grad school, where I had best job ever (see above!).

Wanted to be:
1. A morgan horse breeder, then realized horses cost money and I didn't have any (3rd grade).
2. a marine biologist, then realized I get horribly seasick (6th grade)
3. A stream ecologist, then realized I'd spend 6 months of the year in scuba gear in 40-degree mountain streams looking for caddis fly larvae and the other 6 months out of the year writing grants in an office lit by fluorescent tubes (freshman year in college)
4. Infectious disease epidemiologist with the CDC, then realized I might actually CATCH a hemorrhagic fever (junior year in college)
5. A university professor, but don't really like research all that much. (grad school)

What did you end up doing: Registered environmental health specialist (aka: A Health Inspector).

1) my best job was my last job, 8 years of programming real-time stock market applications, mostly by myself in a closed office, working my own hours (about 0530-1330 normally)

2) dishwasher in a nursing home (in high school) - quit after a few weeks

3) programmer, obvious during my first programming class in high school. Before I took programming I figured I would be an accountant

4) programmer for 27 years, turned down promotions (I would make an awful manager) to retire as a peon

Police patrol officer. The hours are the pits and physically exhausting. The paperwork is incredible - they never show that on TV, or the hours of boredom. But when the "stuff hit the fan" I loved it. Good job for an adrenaline junkie.

Equally, Computer forensic examiner and online fraud detective, for a different phase of life, a way-cool job that at the time was straight out of science fiction, being the cyberspace police. At the time I started doing that there were five people in the entire state of Maryland doing that type of work - called ourselves "geeks with guns". Other law enforcement people thought us a bit strange.

2. what is (was) your worst j*b ever?
Car salesman. I lasted a month, it was the only job I've ever been fired from, and I was laughing when I left the parking lot.

3. what did you really want to do for a living?
Police officer. If I was 22 I'd do it again.

4. what did you end up doing for a living?
Police officer. Retired from that after 29 years, took a six-year vacation, now doing armed security work at a high-security government installation. It almost doubles our income and best of all, there is no paperwork! Yippee!

airline pilot: afrotc told me they wouldn't train a guy who wore glasses.
architect: could hardly draw freehand (i tried for two years--was very frustrating).
zoologist: didn't even try because learning latin species names scared me. i love language but foreign ones throw me.
male prostitute: mom didn't think it a good idea (and that after she'd always told me to find something i was good at, that i enjoyed and that would make me a little money).

4. what did you end up doing for a living?
corporate prostitute (i'd have made out better as a male prostitute--too late now, i suppose).

I guess I shouldn't be surprised that so many people on an internet posting board had/have careers in computer or internet related fields, but I am. Does anyone have any idea what percentage of American jobs are related to computer technology?
