I'm a fan of Western Swing, probably inherited from a grand uncle who played with the biggies in the 1920's on radio shows in Houston, Dallas and Tulsa (like Pappy O'Daniels' Light Crust Dough Boys, The Saddle Mountain Roundup, etc). Beats the hell out of whatever that is they play today. Western Swing's beginnings was as dance hall music in Texas and Oklahoma, and here are two of my favorites by the Texas Playboys playing in Nocona. Big Ball's in Cowtown and Take Me Back to Tulsa.

Asleep at the Wheel

On an airplane flight, I sat next to the singer from "Asleep at the Wheel" (The tall one with the guitar in the link above). That was maybe 15 years ago or more. I had just moved away from Texas and was vaguely familiar with his band. He was a nice guy. We had a great little conversation. We talked about some of the Texas bands I had gotten to know and the day-to-day life of a regional band (at that time).

He also told me - You gotta love to play cause if you don't it just ain't worth it. he told me how much he traveled to keep the band going and how many years he had been at it. I can't remember how many days of the year on the road he was but it was a lot.

A few DJs made fun of this song, but I love the words and it's so fine for a little boot scootin'...

No list of country music favorites would be complete without the Bellamy Brothers "Red Neck Girl." She's got her name on the back of her belt!
