OK, another Mars/Venus observation, real or not:

When asked a direct question, my DW will often not answer it, but rather will start talking about background information, who said what to whom, digressing into areas of unclear relevance (at least to me). Sometimes she never even gets to the original question even when I am certain she's done.

I try to wait it out patiently but sometimes can't help myself and will interrupt, as in, "So what time did you say it was?"

We're pretty used to this pattern after 36 years of marriage and if anything we get a laugh out of it now and then, but other times it drives me nuts.

Male/female thing, or just personal style?

Ah Rich...it sounds familiar. I often ask my wife questions and finish up by pointing out that yes and no are perfectly good answers.

By the way, that doesnt go over very well.

Same here...I ask a question and the DW usually tries to figure out her answer, then figure out what my response to that theoretical answer might be, figure out her comeback based on the theoretical response I might have given if she had answered the question and then actually just reponsd to that question 4-5 generations downstream in how the theoretical discussion may go if everyone answers/responds correctly...she usually ends up answering the question that has nothing to do with what I asked...and I often say, "A simple yes or no would do"...not appreciated in this household either...

Ah yes, we have that one as well. I want to do something for her or have something go the way she wants it, so I ask her, she thinks it over and says what she thinks I want, which a lot of the time isnt what I want.

So then neither of us gets what we wanted and the road to hell gets another paver

Yeah, thats my take. Women want you to enjoy the process, men just want the answer.

For what its worth, I tried it once the other way and explained my thought processes about the matter and all related topics. She didnt like it.

Men seem to like to tell stories, too. Just to other men .

Here's how it goes when I tell my DW a story:

Me: Three guys go into a bar...
She: Just a bar or did they also serve food?
Me: I don't know - it doesn't matter. The first guy says "can you guys see the little schmuck on my shoulder?"
She: He says this to the bartender or to his friends?
Me: He says it to everyone. Doesn't matter. Anyhow, the second guy looks at him and steals a wink at his buddies. "Sure, we see the schmuck on your shoulder <wink>...
She: He must have been a little offended..
Me: Who?
She: The guy in front of me in line at the cleaners today.
Me: What?!
She: At the cleaners. They lost his shirt and when he asked for reimbursement they told him he only brought in 3 shirts.
Me: <sigh>
She: So anyhow, what happened to the schmuck?

(Apologies to those who know what schmuck really means.)

Somehow after all these decades we make it work. In fact, just among us friends, I miss it like crazy when she's gone for a while.

And, I'm not sure that college students are a relevant sample! This study demands replication with a sample of men and women in cars or at dinner.

I'm fairly certain that I know the outcome in my small corner of the universe, and DW agrees.

I definitely talk more that my DH talks. I sometimes go into great detail about something that has happened to me. However, when I ask him a question, alot of times he will not answer my question. He will talk around the answer and I will have to ask him the question again. I have been listening to his non-answer (I don't think that is even a word) to my question and then I say and what is the answer to my question. He will smile now and tell me his answer.

When I needed to cite a couple examples of less-than-flawless naval performance, I referred to Petty Officer Schmuckatelli and his division officer, LT Schmeckel. Got away with it for years...

I know why the study was flawed. They only listened to college age men and women. College aged males talk A LOT usually in an attempt to get college aged women to take their clothes off.

They should have tested married couples.

DW accuses me of talking too much......

How can that be, when I only have TWO answers to her questions?:

1) Yes, dear

2)I have no opinion on that

DING DING DING!

This is like budweiser doing a study at a tractor pull to try and find out what people like better: beer or expensive white wine.

Not that people that go to tractor pulls arent sophisticated. Or like expensive wine. Or that theres anything wrong with that.

Oh nevermind.

I heard there was a study done of diehard NASCAR fans, asking questions like the following:

DO you like Skoal?
DO you drink beer?
DO you like gas fumes?
DO you like the smell of burnt rubber?
DO you like wearing baseball hats?

Amazing, 100% of test subjects said YES to all those questions.........

One of the most subtle ways to produce a poll or study that seems reasonable but says exactly what you want: selection, location and sampling.
