Black and White Printer

I have an Epson color printer that was "free" with my last Apple. It's a certified POS. I would like to replace it with a simple Black and White printer...

I would like some recommendations if you all have some.

Wasn't sure if you cared laser vs inkjet. As you know, B&W printers aren't much in demand anymore and you may not find them in stores? Since you specified simple, I'd just buy a low end HP, though Epson is a good brand too.

If you are printing documents, not photos. an inexpensive Brother laser printer should work well. The work horses I bought a couple of years ago are still in production. On sale, the basic hardwired 2320 should be $49 on a really good sale or $59 on an average sale. If you require wireless, look for the 2360. I have a couple of the 2320's here and one in Arizona. No problems at all.

What Another Reader said.. Consumables is the biggest cost of a printer and laser printers are far cheaper to run in that respect. Mine is wireless which is very nice since I can put it where I want it and not upset the decor of my palatial estate with more wires.

Agreed - I only use laser printers, no inkjet at all and I have always been satisfied with the brother lines of printer example: https://www.amazon.com/Brother-HL-L2...lack+and+white

I am also on the laser side... I still have a small B&W laser in a cabinet here somewhere that if I pulled out it would start printing... my DWs inkjet will stop printing in 3 or so months if not used....


BTW, we do not print with the inkjet as I now have a printer on the network and anybody can print on it...

I have one of the cheap Brother laser printers. I can print wirelessly with my computers but not with my Fire 8 tablet.

Laser is the way to go for black and white. We had one for probably 15 years before it died. The kids printed all their school work on that thing for years. For the volume they printed, ink would have been very expensive.

We don't print very much anymore. But we do have an occasional need for color and for a scanner. I have no desire for multiple printers. So we have a very simple and inexpensive HP all-in-one inkjet. It's been very reliable for around 10 years now. Ink is expensive, but we don't print much, so that's really not an issue.

I've had one for 3-4 years and not only was it inepensive to buy ($50), it is inexpensive to operate thanks to readily available remanufactured toner cartridges.

I have a Brother laser printer / scanner and it goes forever on a cartridge. Amazon sells knock off cartridges inexpensively, too. Rarely need color but DW still has a color printer for occasional use.

I watch CraigsList for "workgroup" laser printers with low page count. I am biased towards HP. This way I get complete overkill on quality and speed plus toner cartridges that are easy to find afterrnarket/refills and which will produce huge numbers of pages before replacement. The one I have right now, HP 2300DN, even has automatic duplexing aka 2-sided printing.

Most laser printers will show page count on their "Configuration" page. Workgroup lasers are typically rated for thousands of pages per month and it's very common for me to find one with only a few thousand total pages printed.

Agreed. I have purchased 4 of these (HL-2270DW - older version, but same basic model I think), and they just work. The cheap compatible hi-yield toner carts work well, and make printing cheap. No fiddling like I had to do with ink jet. Color would be nice on occasion, but it really is pretty rare that I would need it. I can send those out for printing if needed.

Let's see - I purchased mine Jan 2014, 'starter cart' lasted for 1072 pages (I use 'toner saver' mode), the next cart lasted for another 2 years and 1400 pages (should have been 2700 pages, but just barely getting light on one edge, even after shaking the cart). But I figured at ~ $12 for 2 years of printing, I'd just swap it out, and keep it as an emergency spare.

So nice to not have to worry about running it once in a while to keep the old ink jet print heads alive.

I second the endorsement of the cheap Brother laser printers.

Since they work great on WiFi you can place them anywhere it's convenient. You can leave them on all the time since they basically use a couple of watts on standby - they are always ready to print.

I love them.

+1 on the inexpensive Brother B&W laser printers...I have two printers and my sister & BIL have two.

All 4 printers have had flawless performance for more than 6 years using the Brother toner cartridges. We buy the High Yield cartridges which last a LONG time. The printers often sit for 4-6 months unused, as we travel to/from our Florida seasonal homes, and the first page they print after we arrive is always perfect (so no waste and no worry about the toner drying up).

All 4 are wireless and have duplexing capability (saves paper when printing out multi-page documents/booklets.)

I have a very large and very old Brother laser that just always works. I bought a replacement cartridge for it many years ago. Never did have to use the replacement. It is in storage now. I will set it up again when I get moved into my house. Maybe I should put it in the will for one of the kids?

+1. I have a Brother HL-2270DW that has been fantastically reliable and pretty cheap to buy and feed. I use the toner refill kits, and they have been fine. I have three OEM toner cartridges that I bought new, and have refilled them each a few times (the kits also come with a special cog that re-starts the page counter in the printer. There's another way to fool the printer to make it ignore the page count, but I don't mess with it). I would not go back to inkjet for my "workhorse" B&W printing, the laser printers are faster, cheaper, and less fussy.

The "replace drum" light is finally on after many, many thousands of pages. I bought a new drum, but as long as the pages keep printing and look good (they look great), I'll hold off on installing it.
