Blech, had it with TMF

I know that Charlie and some others have been offended or upset by squabbles here, but this board is an absolute oasis of calm compared to the TMF retire early home page. It has degraded into little more than the pettiest partisan squabbling and outright insults one could imagine. I have long been a participant there, but I really have just about had it.

Let's try to keep things friendly here so we don't start down that dark path.

brewer - I used to be on TMF before they started charging...would you say there is more moderating of unfriendly posting here than TMF?

Re: Blech, had it with TMF

I only post here, and at some stock oriented Yahoo sites. This looks far superior to any general retirememnt oriented sites I have ever looked at. Some Yahoo boards, or SI boards are good for those interested in individual stocks. Most are admittedly crap.

Many sites seem to have a resident guru, and some number of toadies praising that guru.

It is boring. I enjoy the atmosphere here of fairly polite and jocular arguing.

Haha

I left MF for the very same reason. *It's an unmoderated place with flames everywhere. *It's also very clicky. *You also get rewarded with recs when you flame someone that everyone else dislikes. *I'd rather spend my $24 bucks somewhere else.

I agree 100%. Most of the Yahoo boards on specific stocks are either nothing but b*tch sessions about other members or they sing praises of one or more "gurus" that have nothing better to do all day than post on the board (er ah...present company excluded of course

I like this site because it has a variety of topics and most of the people here have good posts and rarely flame each other (at least not as much as on other boards). The topics are good and people are active here. That makes it a good board in my book. As long we things don't run too far off track I will stick around.

Yes, the fool.com has lost its direction. Seems all they do anymore is try to sell newsletters. They kinda got out of hand before the big correction directing folks to buy growth at any price. I wouldnt pay to post there.

HaHa: *My wife and I purchased a PC about 2 and a half years ago, and previous to that time, neither one of us had any experience at all on the internet.

This board is the only one I've ever posted on, and that took a while lurking before I posted for the first time.

I've enjoyed the experience a lot, and have especially appreciated the fact that once in a while, after posting an episode 50 years back,
nobody has posted a "who in the hell cares grandpa" retort. *(They're probably thinking it, but so far have been kind enough not to slam me.)

All in all for the amount of posters coming and going, I agree with you, that the board is civil and informative. *(And also pretty darn entertaining on certain threads. )

Re: Blech, had it with TMF

Well, I still follow TMF and useful information can be filtered from it. I also watch and very occasionally post to the Vanguard Diehards site. Lots of good investment data can be found there. But overall the life "wisdom" here is just the best.

Re: Blech, had it with TMF

I have to say that I do owe TMF for getting me started in the right direction back in '98. Looking back now, it was amazing the quality posters who were there. There were a few members who published a few books, not even including those with the "TMF" before their name, IIRC. Some have their own financial websites.

But much has changed since then, and more has changed since I left in '02 (IIRC). It's difficult to say goodbye to those you spent years reading and corresponding with. But finding a place like this (And for me NFB too), makes the change worth it. All this, with no BS and for free!? You bet.

DanTien: Good point. I am certainly "out of the loop" regarding internet technology, and I have wondered the same thing re: the financial side of having this board up and running.

Anybody out there have any info. on the cost of
operating this board? (It's been very reasonable for me since coming on board. )

Actually, dory does have a paypal contribution box on the firecalc result page on the right side.

MJ, you are correct. My guess is Dory is supporting this forum and FIRECALC out of his own pocket with some help from any who are generous enough to contribute through that site.

Interesting that in the 3+ years I've been associated with this forum I've never heard him mention a word regarding contributions. I kicked in a few bucks earlier this year but I'm sure it didn't go far to support this enterprise.

I'd say there is more self moderation here. There is less overt partisan nonsense, and while we all have our biases, most of us do not use whatever axe we have to grind to chop away at others. TMF probably yanks a higher percentage of posts, but still has more of a problem. Things have changed a lot there, and I will be decreasing my participation there.
