Bye Bye Bernie

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060926/...bbers_prison_6

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Former WorldCom Corp. chief Bernard Ebbers is set to start a 25-year federal prison sentence on Tuesday for his role in the $11 billion accounting fraud that toppled a company he had built from a tiny telecommunications firm to an industry giant.

...Ebbers left his upscale, brick-and-stucco home in a gated community in the Jackson suburb of Ridgeland about 8 a.m. Tuesday. At his home on Monday, he refused to answer any questions and told an Associated Press reporter to leave.

"You're not even supposed to be on this property," said Ebbers, 65, who answered the door wearing a light blue golf shirt and blue jeans.

Ebbers walked outside, with a cigar in his mouth, to watch the reporter leave his property.

How does the penal system handle this? Is Ebbers effectively getting a life sentence, or will he be sent home in a few years for his stellar behavior?

Since he has heart problems, it sounds like life to me:

"Under federal rules, Ebbers would be required to serve about 85% of his sentence — meaning he would not be released until 2028 at the earliest, when he would be in his late 80s."
