You should have a router between your computer and the cable modem, as the router will provide some security.

I don't have any experience with wireless extenders, but I assume the extender would need to be in range of your main router in order to "extend" the signal? I suppose that would be OK if you just need a little extra range.

I didn't have any wireless signal on the far end of the house, so I ran a wired cable to a wireless access point in the attic. Now I get a strong wireless signal anywhere in the house, and even outside in some places.

We have two asus routers connected by power line Ethernet. The second router serves to extend the wireless network to the other end of the house.

So I went with an Apple Time Capsule system, it has 2.4 GHZ and a 5 GHZ bands, the 802.11ac connection and is a wireless backup for DWs laptop. Expensive but easy to configure and use. A nice feature is that they told me to see how it works for me and I can bring it back for 14 days for full refund if I want. That kind of service and simplicity of use made it worth the price for me. If this lasts 10 years I will be more than satisfied. All Apple house here; desktop, laptop, two iPhones, iPad, just one old netbook on XP I kept from when I retired 8 years ago and rarely use.
Thanks for the ideas and advice.
