I went to the bank at lunch today, almost got sideswiped by a woman who was eating a GIANT soft serve ice cream cone while driving. After I swerved and slowed down to get out of her way, I pulled up beside her at the next light. It was then that I realized that she was also talking on her cell phone at the same time- phone on speaker, in her left hand on the wheel, cone in her right hand, licking like crazy to keep it from dripping in the Arizona heat; simultaneously having an animated conversation with someone on the phone between licks...

A future Darwin Award winner, I'm sure.

Part of the problem is that it's easy to "hide the evidence" if you crash while on the cell phone or reading or eating or something else. You can't hide drunk. It's too bad there was no way to verify these unsafe activities at the accident scene like you can verify when someone has been drinking too much.

She was taking her other kids to the same school my son goes to. She lives at least 20 minutes away on the opposite side of town. No telling how long the kid had been in that "position".

At least with the cell phone thing it doesn't seem like it would be too hard to get the cell phone records. IIRC they did a similar thing with a train accident recently where some fellow was texting someone on his cell phone right before he plowed his train head-on into another one.
