Cheap Old Wine

Its my mom's birthday and she wants an Italian dinner with "you know, the wine in-a-da-basket-bottle".

Holy crap I shopped all day in coastal NC and finally found a bottle of Bellagio chianti 2002!!! Is it drinkable? Are we gonna die? Is it an extremely rare find? Happy Birthday Mom!

If not , it might be good for cleaning the scale out of the coffeemaker.

I have no idea.

I found an interesting discussion of proper wine storage here.

Well I think I'll pop the cork, let it hyperventilate then taste it. If its good I'll serve it. If it stinks, I'll refill the bottle with good stuff.

Isn't that why winos on the street keep their bottles wrapped in paper bags?

I find here, Chianti 2002 wine prices. Buy wines online. | Wine-Searcher.com, a Bell'Agio 2002 for $12, so I'll guess that it is respectable, but of no great distinction. I just last week bought a cheap Bello Chianti for less than that, and found it good, but a little flat and strong tasting. Good wine to go with spaghetti.

I would spill the wine out and make it into a candle holder ( like the old days ) and buy a nice Merlot .

Thanks GregLee. Its good to know that 2002 is still a regularly available, ah vintage.

We're still alive. If no response by Monday morning, moderators can tidy up and move this to the HOW CLOSE TO DEATH HAVE YOU COME thread.
