Re: Chrysler checks used vehicle performance

nothing beats running a cheap car into the ground, thats the best deal going. But if your not resale value and getting a retail price when you sell are important.

Im not retired yet and we still enjoy new cars every 3-4 years so i prefer to lease, but those days will be gone once we pull the plug in a few years.

Drivin' around today and spotted a 1997 Miata, low mileage and good shape one-owner. Of course I stopped. They were asking $8990!
I pointed out that the car was 10 years old. I was thinkin' maybe
5K was about right. Plus winter is approaching. I walked.

Miata! What is the fun in that? It will start every time, the brakes will work--no adventure. I'll bet you can find an old Midget or Spitfire out there that you can get at the right price AND will supply you with a whole new hobby.

I owned a '73 Midget.

Every morning when I turned the key: will it start? make weird noises? catch fire?

Stories. I owned a 1962 Triumph TR4. BIg fun! I parked it facing
downhill in case I had to roll it to get it started. Also bought a
1972 Fiat Spyder for my daughter. Had a hell of a time finding
someone to work on it. First time in the shop the guy says,
"Do you know what FIAT stands for?" I said no. Answer:
"Fix It Again Tony."
I thought he was kidding.

I too always parked facing downhill.

Learned how to pop the bonnet from inside the left front wheel well.

Learned how to manually loosen the iced-in accelerator cable.

Learned how to double-clutch.

Drove around the parking lot, in an Iowa winter, in first gear on three cylinders until the fourth cylinder kicked in.

(edited for spelling)

Re: Chrysler checks used vehicle performance

I had a Mustang with a leaky radiator and a bad starter, parked on hills and carried a jug of water with me always. After that I had an El Camino I had to start with a screwdriver by jumping the starter connections. It wasn't strange to see me pop the hood to start the truck and it impressed a lot of guys that I could do that without getting all girly freaked out. My dad had 6 kids, 5 girls 1 boy, he taught us all how to do our own maintenence or he would have had a full time job as fleet mechanic.
