Commericals aimed at boomers
Have you noticed the commercials aimed at us boomers and the music they are using in them. Last night I saw a commercial for Fidelity and they used In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida. Do they really think that using that music is going to make me use Fidelity? Well, they are wrong, it actually pissed me off upset me, how dare they take something from my youth and try to use it to entice me to their company.

Re: Commericals aimed at boomers
Better still, I've seen a few that run 3-4 tunes in a row, key generational songs from sequential generations.
The downside to this approach is that most viewers at best say "hey, that was a great song" or "remember that?" and 5 seconds later couldnt tell you what product or company was in the ad. Or maybe thats upside?

Re: Commericals aimed at boomers
Sometimes the songs are very peculiar for what is being advertised. Janis Joplin selling Mercedes Benz? Iggy Pop singing Lust for Life for Carnival Cruise lines? Seems weird to me.

Re: Commericals aimed at boomers
I believe it is called marketing, nothing more and nothing less. Check out the Ameritrade commercials, same type of ads; hippies, tie-dye T shirts, vans, motorcycles, etc., etc. With such a large demographic of babyboomers on the downside of the bell curve of life we are going to be targeted for everything from financial advisors to depends. Get ready and hold on, the party is just starting.

Re: Commericals aimed at boomers
It's all about the number of impressions - Ameritrade, Mercedes-Benz, Fidelity and Carnival Cruises just got a bunch of free publicity right here on the forums since we are discussing this. The songs worked, like it or not.

Yes, it's truly an annoying trend. *My 401K is with Ameriprise and I have to turn the volume down on my speakers when I check my balance. *Ameriprise plays the Lovin' Spoonful song: Gimme some lovin' *All with pictures of 55+ year olds riding kayaks, exercising, etc. *I think the pictures of vibrant boomers are cool, but the music is annoying. *:P

Re: Commericals aimed at boomers
They are messing with my memories and I don't like it!!! Nothing makes me turn the channel faster so it's not working in my household.

Re: Commericals aimed at boomers
I agree. When this first started several years ago, I was appalled - How can they DO that? Now it just pisses me off. It's so transparent. And lazy. Ad agencies used to have to come up with new catchy jingles, now they just abuse the music they think we will react to.
It's not working for me either!

Re: Commericals aimed at boomers
Not to belabor the point, but "Gimme Some Lovin'" was the Spencer Davis Group, aka Steve Winwood.
How about Led Zeppelin and Cadillac? :

The Caddie ads do the same thing, I turn the channel or mute it.

Re: Commericals aimed at boomers
When I see a financial commercial with a couple of dudes sitting around a wire spool shag carpeted covered coffee table and taking hits off a bong, I will have found a company that truly relates to my misguided youth.* *That said, I don't think they would make any better or worse financial advisors than is already on the market.

Re: Commericals aimed at boomers
Lighten up guys! Would you rather they blast rap music in the commercials? I wouldn't. I am usually reading during the commercials anyway so hearing some good ol' rock 'n roll is OK with me.

I would rather hear "It's hard to be a pimp out here" during the financial advisor commericals.
