It's not a virus, i got Norton's lastest stuff and it runs every Tuesday and Friday morning.

Here's some quirks.
1. Close an IE window using the red-X and it wants to send MSFT and error message.
2. If you leave an IE window open and not used for couple of hours, its hung.
3. Suddenly the HD starts working like crazy and things slow to a grind.
IE has a corrupt or missing file, and the hd chugging is probably windows explorer crashing and restarting. Somethings mucked up.

Try this:

Click Open then Control Panel, click the Add/Remove Programs Icon, in the Window select IE, click on Remove button, the pop up should give you two choices, select the one to Repair IE. See if that helps.

You could also download the full service pack 2 and reapply it.

Running setup from your XP disk and choosing to repair the XP install may also help.

Re: Computer help needed

Hmmmmmmm. Sounds very familiar to what happened to me a few months ago. *

I downloaded and installed a new version of McAfee Security Center. *After the install I got no internet access and IE failed over and over and kept trying to send error messages back to the "mother ship" but could not do so since the install screwed the IE and other internet portal programs. *I had to use my other PC to contact "Jack" in customer service in Calcutta. *Long story short....I had to manually uninstall the whole suite including registry entries...took hours to do so. *I re-installed the OS and then bought a different security/firewall/virus scan program. *All has been well ever since except the new software is very memory intensive and eats a lot of clock cycles slowing stuff down a bit. *

Microsoft junk programs require reinstallation from time to time due to file corruption and over-write/update issues that slowly creep into the OS. *

The other thing you could have is adware, a trojan, or other "spyware program" that is eating away at your hard drive and recording and sending out your data at random times. *

Good luck.

Note: *I am happy with my Dell Inspiron lap top. *It is a bit large for travel but I use mine mostly at home so it is not an issue for me.

Re: Computer help needed

I think you guys just jogged my feeble memory. When I bought the computer it had a 60 day trial version of MS OFFICE 2003. When that expired, I just installed my old OFFICE 2000 on it. Then later I got quirks and did an UNINSTALL of OFFICE 2003. Immediately, MS OUTLOOK quit work but I don't use that anyway.

Hmmm, but trouble, trouble, trouble. These VAIOs only allow their recovery disk system. I'm sure that will wipe out my MS OFFICE 2000.

Never again a SONY, great machice, too much in the way of anal attempts to control the user.

Re: Computer help needed

OAP,
You might be able to re-install that trial office 2003 from the disk without doing a complete recovery. I am sure there are shared files that didn't like being wiped out.

If that doesn't help, and before doing the recovery try downloading Open Office 2.0 from http://www.openoffice.org* The files might be replaced from there.

No guarantees. Good luck and keep us posted.

That openoffice*link was terrible...try this one.

Re: Computer help needed

Billy,
I'm going to download it tonight but it looks like Internet Explorer is the culprit.

I may just go with buying the small XPS 1210 from Dell so I can travel light in September.

Thanks for the link, are you guys going back to Thailand soon?

Re: Computer help needed

OAP,
I am sure that there are shared files with IE and office. But believe me, I am no expert. If the download works that's an easy fix.

You know..everywhere we go people ask us "when are you leaving?" Sort of makes me wonder...hummm

It's a bit of a longshot but I was thinking about going to Phuket in August to surf. I figure a couple of months there would get it out of my system. Plus a friend there owes me a beer from the basketball series and that wold be a good reason to collect.

It's almost July, and we've been in the States 5 weeks..it's time to start thinking about traveling..Akaisha saw me looking at the world map a couple of nights ago....something about the way she looked at me told me to quietly fold it and what till she went to bed..

Are you planning a trip there?

Billy

Maybe you need to fire up a broadband cable connection and download Google Earth...

Nords,
If I can pull off this August trip to Phuket, I was hoping you could join me/us for some surfing lessons.

Re: Computer help needed

Really hosed now. Tried removing the ATI external TV Tuner software (recently installed) and for a while the screen would only display 5 inch square. I changed resolution and got about 3/4 of my dsplay area back.

Driver is gone. It's using some default Windows driver.

Nothing I do will get the driver back, download from ATI, used ATI driver disk. The machine will not find the driver for some reason. Running the driver .exe fails.

We can work with this-- sounds tempting! The kid will be in school but I have spouse clearance for independent ops...

Is there anything else to do around Kata Beach for the other one or two hours of sunlight when we're not surfing? Just kidding.

Ya know, I've been through Bangkok's March-May weather. What's Phuket like in August? Is Arizona not hot enough for you guys this time of year?

You're also welcome to come back to these islands...

Re: Computer help needed

Nords,
OK, like I said, it's a* bit of a long shot. It could be fun, but then again when was Thailand NOT a lot of fun...

Unless you want to head up the coast 20 min to Patong there's not much going on in Kata...which is fine for us.

As far as the weather....hot, humid, and hotter...but the water is perfect!

Thanks for the invite. I have never been to Hawaii. We have a friend on Maui, building a house and if he ever gets my room finished I will be there.
He's been working on his house for over a year, and the permits etc. are sucking him dry. He figures it's going to cost him twice what he originally planned and he has yet to break gound!

I feel his pain.

OTOH the place will probably appraise at three or four times what he's paying for it...

Re: Computer help needed

No doubt once it's finished it will be worth big bucks. btw. What is the % rate you pay in property taxes there?

That's a county tax so I'm not sure what it is for Maui.

On Oahu for 2006 it's 3.75 mils of the amount remaining after reducing the assessment by the $40K homeowner's deduction.

JB, what are you paying over there?
