I am pulling the plug in 5 weeks (Wahoo!!!). Technically I will be resigning and not retiring since I am postponing the pension and health care for 4 years (until age 60). My partner is not yet ready to retire, there are still parts of her job that she likes. She doesn't know if she'll go later this summer or work several more years.

I'm going to buy a small van, pack my backpack and hit the road for some solo trips. I am hoping the postcards I send will encourage her to bail sooner rather than later.

Wow! I'm not sure DW would be too happy with that plan from my part! Glad you have such a trusting relationship. Not saying DW doesn't trust me, but I think she'd go nuts at the thought of slaving in the salt mines while I hit the mountaintops.

Then again, I see your point. Get her to drop the w*rk and start living. Clever!

We're the exact same age, so I don't have that excuse.

DW and I do have an agreement. We could both FIRE now if we really had to. We'd have to drop our expected expenses by about 15 or 20%, but we could do it. Actually, what would happen is health costs would eat up that extra 15-20%, along with a longer horizon time necessitating a smaller withdrawal rate. We would have to live more conservatively, but we could live.

So, I've told DW if her job is ever killing her, GET OUT. No need for that. She has had some days...
