It was an old attempt to encourage more women participants - get a version of sweeping up and mopping on the events list.

Re: Curling in the Olympics
Love how people make up their own definitions of 'sport' and 'athlete'... here is the meaning...
sport ( P ) Pronunciation Key (spôrt, sprt)
n.
Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.
A particular form of this activity.
An activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively.
An active pastime; recreation.
Seems all the 'games' mentioned then are sport (except fly fishing... unless it falls under the pastime)
ath·lete ( P ) Pronunciation Key (thlt)
n.
A person possessing the natural or acquired traits, such as strength, agility, and endurance, that are necessary for physical exercise or sports, especially those performed in competitive contexts.
Now, those fat guys that smoke like a chimney that can lift 700 pounds seem to qualify as athletes. However, I doubt they could run 100 yards either.
SO, what have we learned.. Curling is a sport... But my question is why is it an OLYMPIC sport?

.....and why is Baseball / Softball an Olympic sport? Given that most participants are stationary for extensive periods of time and very very few other countries have even the remotest interest in it?

Re: Curling in the Olympics
The only Olympic event I have watched on television this year is women's curling.
Come on, Minnesota and Wisconsin have to get something. We don't get a president. We don't get congress. We don't get the supreme court. At least let us have curling.

12oz curls...
As Gallagher once said:
"Bowling... the object of the game is to do the same thing over and over and over... Won't that be fun..."
"Skiing... You get on top of a slippery mountain with sleds on your feet, and you go down... Try not to!! Go up; now that would be a sport..."

Re: Curling in the Olympics
2006 Olympic Games
These are the Olympic Games not Olympic Sports
I don't think the Greeks had snow sports in mind anyway, but if they knew about it they probably would have had Curling.
Invented in the 1500's by who else? - THE SCOTS
Played by men like this stout lad
and some gals like this one:
Curling is a game of skill and strategy - a combination of boccie ball, shuffleboard, and chess.
It belongs in the Olympic Games.
I think there's entirely to much emphasis on sport in the Olympics anyway.

Martha....I'm with you on watching woman's curling. I've enjoyed watching it.
I'm still trying to figure out the rules and scoring..just by watching it. I think it's harder than it looks.

Yeah, but they also invented the caber toss.

The scoring is based on who has the most stones closest to the middle of the "target". Complications come from guarding, bumping and when and if you can bump or take out another team's stones.

Sounds painful. No wonder this is more of a women's sport...

This all sounds very, very naughty. Combined with the photo...I may have to start watching this 'curling' thing on tv...
