Daesh

It's a new word for me too. Who knew that ISIS or ISIL was changed? But be careful when/where you use it.

Quote:
The word Daesh is now forbidden within the territory controlled by the Islamic State: If you say it, you run the risk of having your tongue cut. The term fell out of favor among the militants after a rebranding by the group's leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in July. Part of the reason is because in Arabic the word "Daesh" can be taken as a play on words to mean something along the lines of "a bigot who imposes his view on others"
If You Hear President Obama and John Kerry Call ISIS “Daesh,” Here’s Why

I've put my Syrian/Iraq vacation plans on hold, so no worries.

I have been too lazy to pursue my retirement goal of learning Mexican Spanish. So, it is probably good for some part of my brain, to learn at least one vocabulary word/acronym from another language. This looks like an easy one to remember.

I actually have long thought that I might travel to see Palmyra, Aleppo and Damascus in my retirement. It's a shame I won't be able to do that now.

For faraway places like those, I find the spherical photomontages in Google Earth to be nearly as good as going there. I've even contributed a few myself.

I was in Aleppo 52 years ago......the market tunnels were right out of 1001 Arabian Nights, and they were working on the citadel.......all gone now.

The terrorist ISIL/ISIS death cultists put the Arabic acronym for their group (al-Dawla al-Islamiya al-Iraq al-Sham) on that black banner they are so fond of. It turns out that if you pronounce the acronym داعش like a word, it sounds like "da'esh". Da'esh in turn sounds like "da'es": one who crushes something underfoot (derogatory).

No sir, they don't like it.

Many of the smaller items, or large items that could be cut up and shipped, have made their way into the antiquities gray markets. It's one of the ways Da'esh funds their operations, along with extortion, kidnapping, human trafficing, smuggling, and 'donations' via paths as varied as Kuwaiti and Qatar banks and FaceBook's WhatsApp.

Many of the historical items aren't gone, just tucked away in private collections.

Bingo. I just don't understand the wanton destruction of antiquities.

I am pretty sure most of us could come up with names they like even less. "Target" for starters...

Anything but Isis, according to DD's friends who named their little girl after that Egyption goddess.

Oh, that poor little girl! This is just TOO much for a little kid to have to be saddled with right now, IMO.

Time for her parents to quickly appropriate some sort of generic nickname for her. I am thinking she could be called something like "Buffy", "Muffy", "Dixie", "Daisy", "Penny", "Kiki", "Sunshine", or whatever. Or, maybe she has a usable middle name. If she is still a baby, or if she doesn't care, then they could have her name legally changed to something less politically charged, but preferably not "Da'esh".

And think about how the manufacturers of this product feel:
