Dealing with Comcast, blamed it on DW

After some unsuccessful tries negotiating our bill with Comcast, I read this article: How to Lower your Comcast Bill Price

So I called Comcast and went through the menu to "discontinue service". The lady was very nice and my line was: "I'm retired and my wife wants to lower the bill. She heard of a good deal with ATT and wants me to try them." The rep probably knew it wasn't DW but it made me feel better playing the beaten down old retiree caught between Comcast and aggressive DW.

Anyway our new bill is now $31/month lower for 12 months (no contract if we want to discontinue) plus some new packages we weren't getting. Told DW about how Comcast is scared of her now and she really enjoyed that picture. She's actually a lamb.

Nice. I just read a blogger post that ripped Comcast for their poor service and billing practices. In case you care,

I talked to Comcast twice about this time last year and they wouldn't do anything for me.....I told them that if this was the case I would be switching. Then when I made the switch to Directv and called to cancel Comcast.....THEN they were willing to deal. Told them it was too late at that point and they even went as far as to try to get me to cancel my Directv since it had just been switched over. They could have kept me for another year or two if they had made just a little effort.

From the article I linked to, you have to get through to the "retention" person. The easiest way to do this is to actually pick the "discontinue service" option on the phone menu choices.

Nowadays it appears the regular reps are just there to dicker with you forever and offer very meager (or no) discounting.
