dehumidifier recommendations

I need a new dehumidifier for my basement. 50 pint should do it. I was hoping to find something around 600 watts and under since these things suck a lot of electricity.

Anybody have an energy efficient one that works well?

Don't have a home dehumidifier. But you might want to check at home improvement stores like Home Depot, Lowes, or Menards. They should have a good selection to choose from.

I had to find one that works at 50 F or it wouldn't work in my basement. Ended up being the only consideration for me but it has continued to work for years. The regular ones died because of the cool temps. I also rigged up one of those furnace pumps to take the water & send it outside.

Newer ones are more efficient, but you can probably find one on Craigslist for a fraction of the new price.

We bought one of these:

in Jan '08 for $150, and it's worked fine. I don't like the company, and it isn't energy-star rated, but I have to admit that it's done it's job quietly and reliably.

We also got a Kenmore at a garage sale for $20. It also works well and has a reservoir that's easier to remove, although it's louder.

The Soleus keeps the fan on even when the humidity is below the set point, the Kenmore does not (preferred). Also, the Soleus won't restart if the power goes out momentarily, meaning you can't have it on a timer.

Remember that a stronger unit won't necessarily use much more energy since it will presumably be on less.

We've tried a few different brands - can't remember anyone of them being good. They all seem to last about 18 - 24 months and freeze up from loss of gas. We have a big collection of dead ones.

Its a whirlpool model ad40usl3. It has an energy star cert fwiw. Can't remember how old it is but its been chuging away down there for several years.
