Re: DirectTV

It helped, but I was immediately besieged with polls, donation calls and the other stuff thats still allowed.

Real relief? I moved from a landline to the at&t callvantage VOIP provider. They were a little bit more expensive than vonage and packet8, but they were the only one that could port my old number and they have a feature called 'do not disturb' that vonage and packet8 dont have.

I set DND and everyone gets a voice prompt saying that if they're a friend or family member, press 2, otherwise leave a voicemail.

I've had a couple of brave telemarketers press 2 and start their pitch, only to be asked which side of the family they're on or if they're a friend of my wifes, since they dont sound familiar to me.

Its kinda fun to see how long they'll twist in the wind before deciding that discretion really is the better part of valor.

Be fearful when others are greedy, and greedy when others are fearful. Just another form of "buy low, sell high" for those who have trouble with things. This rule is not universal. Do not buy a 1973 Pinto because everyone else is afraid of it.

Re: DirectTV

I have perfected the art of making telemarketers hang up on me. (Oh, I mean donation requesters and poll-takers). Mostly I just don't answer, but if I'm itching for a fight I pick it up and see how fast I can get them to hang up on me. Most of them are not even a challenge anymore.

Re: DirectTV

I pay $60/mo, which breaks down to $45 per month for cable internet, and $15 for the "expanded basic" package (60 or so TV channels) from Comcast.

I could not live without my cable internet connection!

Sure you could. And a lot of other stuff you are paying for.
