(Dynamic) Art for Engineers

Not so sure about the narrative, but sure is purty fascinating IMO!

Reuben Margolin: Sculpting waves in wood and time | Video on TED.com

Quote:
Reuben Margolin is a kinetic sculptor, crafting beautiful pieces that move in the pattern of raindrops falling and waves combining. Take nine minutes and be mesmerized by his meditative art -- inspired in equal parts by math and nature.

Nice! TED is a wonderful venue for ideas.

This guy comes up with good stuff, too. Art plus engineering often opens some cool doors.

Pretty neat sculptures. Watching waves is hypnotic.

Looks like Frank Gehry may have some competition.

Those pendulum waves were very interesting to watch. I'm glad I'm not in some math class where the prof asks us to do some equations to describe those interactions. Makes you wonder though if the problem is tractable.

Y'all tickled my inner Sandy Calder.

It got me to Google "kinetic sculpture" and found that there are a lot of interesting YouTube videos on the subject.

Something for me to play with in my autumn years.

Me too. So much so that I'm seriously thinking about building one like the square wave in the video...fascinating. My engineer brain has been visualizing the design for the past two days...

Be sure and post pictures as you work on your project. It sounds like fun!
