Elections Always Won by Politicians

Ever think about the fact that the only people who get elected are politicians? That is, we limit ourselves to the segment of the population that is good at campaigning.

There might be people that would be great leaders, but since they are not good politicians, they will not get elected (or even run).

We don't elect people based on their skill at running government, we elect them based on their skill at campaigning (think sound bites, gaff avoidance, spin doctors).

And I'm not sure that there's a good correlation between running a campaign and running a government.

TAl:

You have a point. The best and brightest may be defered from government because of the election process. Also anyone who has anything in their past will probably remove themselves from running.

Others would argue that we have the exact system that we collectively want. After all we elect again and again those that are best at it.

However the way I like to look at it is that the politicians only set policy and the government minions start cranking the wheels and then impliment it.

Where I see this the most clearly is in local government. I know plenty of people who would be great mayors and city counselors but would not dream of running because of the "politics" of it all.

And so we get people who are not the most qualified and sometimes extraordinarily unqualified.

Same here. Sometimes I even wonder if that is a job I could be good at. In my engineering career I have done well at researching and solving problems, and at getting different factions to agree on a proposed solution that everyone can live with. Those seem like useful skills for a city council member or mayor.

However, when someone intentionally distorts the facts, spins, or basically lies about incontrovertible facts, I just can't work with them.

Since I see that behavior every day from politicians, I believe that disqualifies me from any political office. :P

On my most cynical days I think that politicians, police, and other positions of power should be staffed by lottery, with strict term limits, and that anyone who seeks out a position of power should therefore be disqualified from having it.

A local political writer has pointed out that the politicians with the most funding win most of the races.

So future Hawaii elections should be awarded to the highest bidders, with the money going straight into the state's general fund.

So that explains why most members of congress are lawyers ! They have their skill set well honed before they go into politics

As Steven D. Levitt points out, the popular/successful candidates always attract the most money. For those people that are unpopular but choose to fund themselves through their personal stash - well they almost always lose.

It is not just the money that wins elections. You have to be somewhat popular as well as have lots of money.
