ER / Retirement Songs

I don't remember ever hearing the word "retire" or "retirement" in a song, so a post in this thread will require some imagination...

I found two old threads to get you started.
ER Songs
Songs relating to RE

Quote:
Off our rockers actin' crazy
With the right medication we won't be lazy
Doin' the old folks boogie
Down on the farm
Wheelchairs they was locked arm in arm
Paired off pacemakers with matchin' alarms
Gives us jus' one more chance
To spin one more yarn
And you know that you're over the hill
When your mind makes a promise that your body can't fill

The Who

Listened to this the first day of retirement.

I'm free, I'm free,
And freedom tastes of reality,
I'm free-I'm free,
AN' I'm waiting for you to follow me.

If I told you what it takes
to reach the highest high,
You'd laugh and say 'nothing's that simple'
But you've been told many times before
Messiahs pointed to the door
And no one had the guts to leave the temple!

I'm free-I'm free
And freedom tastes of reality
I'm free-I'm free
And I'm waiting for you to follow me.

Chorus:

How can we follow?
How can we follow?

Have always loved this song - words and melody alike. When I was young, it was about "How should I live my life?" Now that I'm thinking about retiring, this is my No. 1 pick for that, too. "I'm free...and I'm waiting for you to follow me!"

Musicians: another avocation with no incentive to ever retire...

Most popular songs seem to be about falling in and out of love.

Perhaps songwriters feel that a song about retirees in love would not sell many copies.

"September Song" comes to mind, and I have never liked it much. It's "bittersweet," and the only bittersweet thing I like is chocolate.

"When I'm Sixty-Four" seems to qualify, but it's obviously meant as a joke.

Good ones, guys. Keep 'em coming.

Couldn't find a video, but this one from Nitty Gritty Dirt Band hits the spot:
Forget the Job (Get a Life) - The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band : Listen, Appearances, Song Review : AllMusic

Quote:
Forget The Job (Get A Life)

Hey everybody take a break
You're puttin' up with more than you should take
You've got work up to here fifty weeks a year
What difference would a couple days make
You got to get out in the world and see what's going on
You won't know what you're missin' 'til the missin's all gone

Forget the job (get a life) forget the job (get a life)
Forget the job (get a life, get a life, get a life)
Hey

You get an hour to grab lunch
You barely start before you have to be done
Someone comes up to you, you think they're real cute
But you have to be back before one
Or the boss'll be mad, the place'll fall apart
What you gonna do when it's him or your heart

Forget the job (get a life) forget the job (get a life)
Forget the job (get a life, get a life, get a life)
Hey

You come home half dead
Jammed traffic still poundin' in your head
Dishes in the sink, you could use a drink
Laundry piled up on the bed
You never stay home you party all the time
You really got to get your priorities in line

Forget the job (get a life) forget the job (get a life)
Forget the job (get a life, get a life, get a life)
Hey

Well...I am down to 1 year and 1 month left. I feel blessed in this day and age. Life really does get better with age. But it is not by accident...it was by planning, living below our means, and investing. And this is my official retirement song: (listen to the lyrics)...

There's so many things I want to do now...but with work in the way it is difficult. For me, this is how being retired will feel:

When I wrote "The Military Guide", I included short rock&roll excerpts in each chapter header.

The publisher edited them out-- copyright concerns.

Someday I'll get them back in: Table of contents

Not exactly what I have in mind for my retirement, but the mood definitely fits.

I don't hear the word "retirement" in the lyrics but it does suggest the main reason to retire (at least to me).

Ultimate ER song

Enjoy Yourself (It's Later Than You Think)
by Guy Lombardo

You work and work for years and years, you're always on the go
You never take a minute off, too busy makin' dough
Someday you say, you'll have your fun, when you're a millionaire
Imagine all the fun you'll have in your old rockin' chair

Enjoy yourself, it's later than you think
Enjoy yourself, while you're still in the pink
The years go by, as quickly as a wink
Enjoy yourself, enjoy yourself, it's later than you think

You're gonna take that ocean trip, no matter come what may
You've got your reservations made, but you just can't get away
Next year for sure, you'll see the world, you'll really get around
But how far can you travel when you're six feet underground?

Your heart of hearts, your dream of dreams, your ravishing brunette
She's left you and she's now become somebody else's pet
Lay down that gun, don't try my friend to reach the great beyond
You'll have more fun by reaching for a redhead or a blond

Enjoy yourself, it's later than you think
Enjoy yourself, while you're still in the pink
The years go by, as quickly as a wink
Enjoy yourself, enjoy yourself, it's later than you think

You never go to night clubs and you just don't care to dance
You don't have time for silly things like moonlight and romance
You only think of dollar bills tied neatly in a stack
But when you kiss a dollar bill, it doesn't kiss you back

Enjoy yourself, it's later than you think
Enjoy yourself, while you're still in the pink
The years go by, as quickly as a wink
Enjoy yourself, enjoy yourself, it's later than you think
