Watching the annual build a better burger contest always makes me hungry and inspires me to try a few different recipes.

What are your favorites for seasoning the meat as well as toppings.

Please also share your cooking techniques, meats, buns etc...

I've lazily just thrown in whatever I have in the pantry - some sea salt, pepper, garlic powder, dried onion, soy sauce and seasoned salt...a dash of the above and worcester if i have some.

also have done a greek burger with oregano and topped with greek yogurt.

love grilled red/yellow peppers and onions and different spreads like olive tapenades.

i cook in my trusty cast iron pan.

i've been fiddling around with the size of my patties and how thick to make them...haven't found the winner yet.
 
start with meat loaf mix (beef,pork,veal), add chopped onions and green peppers, 1 egg and seasoned breadcrumbs, until mix sticks together, form pattys and grill, add slice of cheeze 2 minutes before removal from fire, place on bun and top with your favorite condiments.

Salt, pepper, onion and garlic powders, grilled on the barbie, served with a slice of pepper jack, slice of tomato, slice of onion, handful of antacids...
 
Meat: I grind together some beef round and ham (for a smoky flavor). I throw a bit of sea salt on the patties before grilling and that's it.

Cheese: aged swiss

Sauce: mixture of chopped shallots, chopped pickles, mayo, ketchup, salt and pepper.

Dare I say I like bacon on mine....:D
 
I like to chop onion (.25 inch chunks) and mix it in with the ground beef before cooking.
 
I buy whole turkey breasts, and grind them myself.

(cut into small strips, put on tray in freezer until 3/4 frozen, then grind in batches using a normal food processor)

Then I add lots of Worcestershire sauce and grainy mustard, and a little salt and pepper. Then make the patties. I'll then cook two and freeze the rest.

They're delicious. And unlike store-bought ground beef, you actually know what animal parts are going into your burger.
 
I go for a mix of ground beef and sirloin.

Season with garlic powder, black pepper, and sea salt.

Did I mention the pat of butter I put in the middle (either President or Plugra depending on what I have on hand)
 
BOCABURGER on the hibachi.

i prefer morningstar's original grillers. the other day i tried a gardenburger with a small order of fries at a burger king per the fast food thread. geeeeerrrrrrrrooooooooooss. was my first time at a fast food in & for a long time. no thank you.

i like grillers fried in a touch of olive oil or better on the grill per martha's bocaburger, melted swiss or provolone, served on english muffin or a nice bun with a variety of lettuce (endive is nice & crunchy), onion (sometimes sauted), tomato and ketchup.

i've served that to people who otherwise swear they hate vegie burgers and they wind up liking it.
 
I like veggieburgers and tofu. However, I enjoy meat products better. At least two times a week we eat meatless.

I think today I might fix some Jenny-O turkey burgers on the grill. No bun with a lettuce wrap type of deal.
 
Just Perfect ground turkey with some Bone Suckin Sauce BBQ sauce and a couple of slices of crumbled Chrunch Oat Aunt Millie's bread all mixed in and fried. Yummmmm.

Ewww, Bocaburgers. I have a freezer full of them and eat them maybe once a week, but if beef was the same nutritionally I'd choose it every time!

I like HFWR's burger in post #3 above, and the quality of fresh bread or bun is crucial.
 
Best I've had are 1/2 grassfed beef and 1/2 venison sausage. Awesome! Seasoned with some John Boy & Billy Grilling sauce and it is heavenly (y'all up north have no idea what that is, but I promise it is good stuff). :)
 
I haven't seen this one. I'll have to look.

morningstar products are pretty good. the sausages are ok as long as you eat them hot. if they cool off before you eat them just throw them out. i've done them grilled with sauted onion & pepper on a nice roll. very nice. the prime burger tastes too much like real meat for my tastes so i go for the original griller. good texture & flavor. forget about morningstar fake bacon. not so good.
 
Last Friday, Oprah had this turkey burger recipe from Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach. Ms. O said it was the best turkey burger in the entire world. Haven't tried it yet, but here's the recipe:

INGREDIENTS

  • 1/4 cup scallions, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup celery, finely chopped
  • 3 Granny Smith apples, peeled and diced
  • 1/8 cup canola oil
  • 4 pounds ground turkey breast
  • 2 Tbsp. salt
  • 1 Tbsp. black pepper
  • 2 tsp. chipotle Tabasco™
  • 1 lemon, juice and grated zest
  • 1/2 bunch parsley, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup Major Grey's Chutney, pureed

Sauté the scallions, celery and apples in the canola oil until tender. Let cool.

Place the ground turkey in a large mixing bowl. Add sautéed items and the remaining ingredients. Shape into eight 8-ounce burgers. Refrigerate for 2 hours.

Season the turkey burgers with salt and pepper. Place on a preheated, lightly oiled grill. Grill each side for 7 minutes until meat is thoroughly cooked. Let sit for 5 minutes.
 
A good old Aussie burger requires the usual slab of beef plus an egg done on the barbie, throw on a slice of pineapple and a generous helping of beetroot. Hmm my mouth is watering.

The tomato and basil gardenburger is pretty good. I cook those and serve on a bagel with a fried egg and cream cheese.

Also, the Morningstar spicy black bean are awesome.

edit: Back when I ate beef, there was a great stuffed burger near our house... angus burger stuffed with bacon and sharp aged cheddar.

with a touch of kosher salt

my father liked it topped with a slice of raw onion
 
You can always slide it under the broiler for a bit to make it crispy on top.
