For men only! Why Viagra?

OK, this is embarassing, but I need to satisfy my curiosity.

Why is there a market for Viagra and the likes? Don't males already have enough problems with their higher sexual desires than females? Why the urge to make an existing problem worse?

And who buys these products? Males or females?

Well, I think it's like this:

When it's 100 degrees in the shade and you want a popsicle in the worst way...and your refrigerator isn't working...then when the popsicle salesman comes around, you want one right away.

I assume "you" is a female. Otherwise, I have no idea what you're talking about.

A MALE with a good, non-melting popsicle can attract any kind of crowd of popsicle lovers he wants. It's the non-melting part that viagra provides, I think.

I see what you're saying.

So in your view, it's an ego issue. Although that male has no current sexual desire, he still wants to attract the females. Interesting theory, but is it true?

Nope. Ego may be involved, but that's not what I was saying.

Your assumption of no sexual desire for the male would make Viagra unnecessary. It the male has desire, but no way to achieve an erection, he cannot satisfy that desire...or his partner's. Viagra allows a desirous male to get an otherwise unattainable erection. This allows the male to match the female's desire.

That's new to me. My thinking is: No erection, no desire.

Perhaps you should google 'erectile disfunction'.

Uhm, no.

Mind can't always triumph over matter, and IMO a guy's biggest sexual organ is inside his skull. There may be plenty of desire while still lacking the physical infrastructure to do much about it. A prostatectomy can end up destroying a number of nerves & blood vessels in an area where you really don't want to see a scalpel. Or medical issues such as high blood pressure or diabetes or circulatory conditions can lead to a lack of circulation in an area where you'd really like to be able to pump up the volume (so to speak). Or you could be a serial polygamist with an HBO contract that puts a different kind of pressure on your performance psyche.

Those have all been deemed valid reasons to increase a whole different type of circulation, clear out the obstacles, and take things to the next length level. Or words to that effect.

A couple years ago Hawaii went through a big boost in Japanese visitor numbers. Among other things it turned out that Viagra prescriptions were much easier to obtain in Hawaii than in Japan so visitors of a certain demographic were flying here, getting their prescriptions fulfilled after a token exam, and then smuggling their gains back through Japanese customs. It led to a whole new meaning to the words "hardened criminal"...

Most of the ED I see in my practice was "functional" meaning it happened when all the plumbing was still in fine shape. Typically, young stud would be drinking frothy beverages. The mind became more and more willing and the body just became more and more drunk. Finally, the moment of truth would arrive and.... no go.

From that moment on, performance anxiety sets in - so concerned about how things are developing down south that he is distracted, worried, and of course the desired effect fails him again. It becomes a vicious circle.

While there are counselling things that I always tried first, they worked about half the time. A few tablets of Viagra would sometimes restore the confidence and get the motor started.

And Nords is right - in men with medical reasons for erectile dysfunction, it can restore a sense of confidence and intimacy. OTOH, there are quite a few men and their partners where this is just not a high priority and they move on without a second thought.

OK. So it's really new to me.

At what age, usually, does an average man begin to experience this "phenomenom" (desire but no physical infrastructure)?

I love the use of code words here. So here's a hypothetical guy who goes out and buys some viagra, only to find his wife no longer has the libido to appreciate the results... all dressed up and no where to go.

Given the common lack of sexual communication between husbands and wives, wouldn't it be interesting if only the wives could request
perscriptions for these products.

The drug companies probably don't see it that way, though.

Odd drug. Most who need it are in later stages of coronary artery disease, now as rich pointed out are the young guys who drink way too much and well alcohol can make wally a softy must have in the bag of tricks.

By the way the drug should not be paid by drug copays. You want it pay full price. This is not a life threatening need.

Here's the question I've always been too embarrassed to ask: Does viagra produce an erection in the absence of desire, or does it just enable one? That is, if you're talking with your mother-in-law about different methods of cleaning a septic tank, and you take a viagra: boing or no boing?

I have asked the same question about Viagra and penile implants, why would a male do it if he does not have the desire.

The answer I get is "it's for the female partner" just because the male does not have the desire does not mean that his partner does not.

And what is the antidote to those guys who suffer erections for 5 hours or more and are supposed to call the Doctor?

What does the doctor do?

by this logic, acne medication, sleeping pills, and pain killers should not be covered either since they are typically not life-threatening.

this is just a clear-cut situation where you want your personal values to drive insurance policy
