To me, this sounds less like a cat, and more like a teenage kid, out with his friends, who suddenly spots his parents.

Not consistent with my experience...back when it was still considered OK to have outdoor cats, I had a Burmese cat who would stop patrolling for field mice when he saw me, and dash 300 yards at top speed to leap into my arms.

Cats vary, of course, as do other species. I wish some of my SO's had been half as demonstrative as that cat

Years ago I started caring for a neighborhood cat who had been abandoned when his family moved and left him behind. Anyway, this cat was incredibly appreciative and learned when I would be home from work - he'd be waiting by the garage door for my car when I arrived home! One day I was walking around the neighborhood and spotted him behind a shrub - he literally came running to me. It was a very nice moment.

(And for anyone who is wondering, I wanted badly to adopt him but couldn't because my indoor-only male cat was throwing hissy fits and I was afraid there would be bloodshed. I did find a wonderful home with one of my neighbors for the abandoned cat. For years this cat would occasionally "pop in" to my yard and we'd have a wonderful reunion.)

No one visits me, but they do visit my cat.
Love me, love my cat?
