Free Internet Music Websites

Does any one know of any websites that let you choose what songs to listen to free of charge? I don't necessarily want to download to a ipod or MP3, just want to listen (while I surf on the net), like the radio, but want to choose my songs that I want. Is there such a website?

I really love Pandora.com, but it won't let you chose the exact song, just the exact kind of music you like. I think the federal licensing laws prevents you from being able to do what you describe. I am hazy on the details, though. I think there was something about the law posted on yahoo's launchcast radio site.

This was kind of fun - wide variety within the Vietnam era.

Yes, Pandora is fun.

I just read that Universal Music will be providing their giant catalog of music free on their ad-based website starting in Dec. They are going to try to make money just using advertising - sounds good!

You can transfer the songs to an MP3 player - but not Apple computers or Ipods - can't burn to a cd.

I'm too chicken to play around with peer to peer sites such as Limewire. I'd rather pay the .99 for a song then to have the feds come knocking at my door. I'm exaggerating a bit, but you know what I mean. Besides, I do not want any mal or spy ware entering my system with peer to peer software.

I gave up on file sharing once it became clear that it was illegal and all of the viri and conter measures started appearing. I listen to radioparadise.com for a great, eclectic mix of music from teh 50s/60s thru current cutting edge stuff. I occassionaly listen to it with Station Ripper (free download) that allows me to save a couple of days worth as individual MP3s which I dump on the iPod.

It has been a while, but I used to tune in to www.kbon.com from Eunice, Louisiana, for my Cajun and zydeco fix on Sunday afternoons.* It is funny listening to radio ads for a local grocery and casino far, far from La.* I miss Louisiana.

Fun station. I love Zydeco and I justed tuned it in after reading your post. Makes me want to dance - an act that usually requires a little lubricating alcohol.

What about a good streaming audio recording program? I'd be interested in finding a way to record music from Yahoo Launchcast Radio if anyone knows of one.

There are two ways:

1. If you have a newer sound card that supports a "record what you hear" option, you can record directly.

2. Get a cord with a mini-phone (stereo) on each end. Plug one end into the speaker output of your computer, and the other into the line-in jack. You can then use a free app such as Audacity to record the audio (set it to record from line in rather than mic). It's annoying to have to go through this analog step, but you can get good results.

Thanks Al. There are some programs out there that can record specific songs, attach identifying info, etc..., but none of them seem to be able to handle Yahoo Launchcast yet. I may try your little technique, although I'll have to manually edit out the annoying "commercials" Yahoo inserts on its free listening option.

I use Station Ripper. It cuts a stream into individual MP3s with info on the title and artist. It ties into "Shoutcast" I think. I don't know about Yahoo's service. As I mentioned before I just save RadioParadise.com which has lots of music, no commercials, and few station ID interuptions.

Lots of regular radio stations also have streaming webcasts. One of my favorites is WWOZ in New Orleans. They do mostly jazz & jazz roots programming.
They lost a lot of their facilities during Katrina, but they're listener supported & are now b'casting regularly.

I learned from the Station Ripper forum that it doesn't cover Yahoo. If there are equivalent streaming music services out there, I'm game to use it.

Re: Free Internet Music Websites

Doesn't let you choose your own songs, but http://www.boomerradio.com/ has 4 channels of music from soul to classic rock to jazz on its website. Very few commercials. I am partial to mid-60s to mid-80s classic rock.

Can stream to your desktop icon using Abacast client.
