Funny Tuesday Videos

This video was e-mailed to me by a shipmate who's tied into the military old-fart aviator's network. These guys are mad that we don't have personal jet cars yet (who wouldn't be mad?!?) so they're keeping an eye out for anything close to it.

This website has a few challenges. First, it's in French but Google has a translator. Second, the "video" is run by Flash and it can be balky. I didn't get a smooth run until the third try. Finally, it's very light on the technical details.

Essentially an old-fart aviator has found a way to strap a wing to his back, hang four JATO bottles from it, and soar around the sky for five minutes. He has to jump out of an airplane to get his starting velocity and he has to land with a parachute (on his knees, ouch), but for five minutes he's an aerodynamic lifting body flyin' machine.

I'd still like to know how he jumps into the slipstream without whacking his wing on the airplane's fuselage. And I wonder what happens if the JATOs fail on one side. Otherwise it looks like a fantasy come true!

Especially for TargaDave:

Squirrel catapult.

Would that be a squirrelapult?

Extra evil points to anyone whose first thought was to yell "PULL!"

Women of CVN76
Wow. That video should've been made 25 years ago! It's a big hit with the women in this household.

Now I have to find out who the O-6s are the end. I wonder if that high-five was the change of command.

BTW the guy in the anti-contamination suit is gonna be in big trouble with Naval Reactors... unless, of course, he's already served out his time!

Nords - WOW great video - I laughed all the way through it - now to go send it to some of my female officer friends.....Air Force of course - need to find one with the Air Force women...Thanks - Deserat

Especially for TargaDave:

Al, That artful animation was a big hit on the kitesurfing forums. Always a few that think it actually happened. Here is my feeble early attempt at kite videography and pretending to kitesurf. Nothing like a camera to induce lots of wipeouts (almost took out the camera on one pass). DW's only comment: 49 going on 12:D

(let me know if this actually works. First real post to YouTube)

Wow, that's a great video. Man, you've really got the moves down! Thanks for posting that.

What was the wind speed? Looking at the water I'd have guessed something like 8 knots, no whitecaps, no chop. But you need lots more than that don't you?

What was the video camera mounted on?

At 8 knots I'm on the ole windsurfer. Wind here was about 15 to 22 mph. The water depth is less than 3 ft so you don't see big waves or white caps. Camera is mounted on a cheap tripod. Turn it 180 deg and you'd be staring at the Atlantic City skyline. It's hard to line things up and time a move so your always in frame and close enough to look like more than a spec, but not smack right into it. My previous film crew (16 yr old DD) has moved on to other better paying assignments:p
