The nuvi 350s are dropping fast because the 660 is out. Amazon is at $484. Good prices.

Re: garmin gps on sale at walmart

its a great unit. im always getting lost so it will be perfect.

although the factory systems are superior in performance they wanted almost 2,000 bucks. for 488.00 its well worth it.

phew! 965.00 for the 660

Re: garmin gps on sale at walmart

i have no interest in using blue tooth or playing mp3's with my gps, just point me in the right direction.

i have owned handheld units for over a decade now. the first generation sucked but they got better once the receivers went to parallel recieving. they still are intermittant in the woods or around buildings or mountains.

thats where the factory installed units have the edge, they are now tied into the auto transmission so when signals are lost they fill in the blanks with info from the trannny. they also know when your in reverse so they dont reverse directions on you.

Re: garmin gps on sale at walmart

My understanding is that all of the latest units on the market with the Sirfset III GPS chipset are greatly improved. It is a fundamental improvement from the previous generation. This resolves many of the former coverage/blockage problems.

Re: garmin gps on sale at walmart

I don't know, but you should check. I had just happened to read that Garmin article last evening, and I thought it might be relevant to your purchase so I posted it, since that may be the reason for the discount.

My point in the last post is that the quality of receivers of all brands has increased greatly as chipset quality has increased and OEM prices have fallen. It is less of a brand thing now (although I know that Garmin stuff has been outstanding overall). This might be why Garmin is changing their business model. Maybe software and databases are the main differentiator going forward and Garmin is focusing there.

But I have not personally done research to allow for a recommendation. My advice is to just be careful about rushing out to buy something without checking.

Re: garmin gps on sale at walmart

also, the way I learn about any topic nowadays is usually through internet forums. There are lots of GPS forums out there where users dispense valuable info. It really is the most efficient way to learn. But it does take some work to do the research, unfortunately. This is a big drawback with modern electronics, in general, the purchase decision can be complex and personal.

Re: garmin gps on sale at walmart

Does anyone know if it is possible to survey a property boundary with a gps? I need to locate a corner of my property that is in heavy woods making it impossible to measure it with a tape. The survey marker is gone or pushed into the ground. In any case I can’t find it. I need to be accurate within a few feet.

Re: garmin gps on sale at walmart

there still is a good element of error in handheld gps units. although the big errors have been weeded out there stilll can be as much as a 50ft leeway at times . the woods are tough to get coverage too, more ofton than not my handheld gets no signal under the cover of the woods

I managed to plant an oleander on top of a boundary pipe and the surveyors kept losing the signal when they got into its vegetation. I can only imagine what's going to happen to your GPS in "heavy woods".

If a tape measure will get you with 20 feet or so, how about a metal detector?

Re: garmin gps on sale at walmart

Well there is suppose to be a metal pin in the ground. But there is also a wire fence so I don't think that will work either. I guess I could clear out the fence row then measure it.

The best accuracy I have gotten so far is 7ft with a Garmin 60cX, with WAAS enabled, on a clear day. If you intend to use under foliage, make sure you get a GPS with the new SiRF III antenna. The older antenna will most likely not able to get any signal.
