I have one in mint condition that my sister used to ride. The only thing I know is they are custom built. I'm looking to get rid of it but don't want to use craiglist or somewhere where I'll get $100 offers..........

Ideas on a good price to sell it for?

Can you sell it for commission at a local bike shop? You can put a high price, as you're not in any rush.

Only a very small line is custom; the rest are good but basically run of the mill bikes.

some trail sites, especially those in established parks, have bulletin boards where you could post a listing. or classified sections on cycling forums or bike forums or www.mybikesite.com or you can try selling through local biking organizations like this one in florida: Club Scrub - Jonathan Dickinson State Park Bike Trails

oh yeah, what ha said. be careful not to make any undue claim in your ad. under all that sweat a lot of these mtn bikers are techies who will ridicule an unsubstantiated claim as readily as in, oh i don't know, any retirement forum?

One easy way to get a ballpark estimate of the value of a bike is by the component group. Shimano is the dominant mountain bike component manufacturer. Shimano component groups are

Deore
Deore LX
Deore XT
Deore XTR (They may have dropped the "Deore" from the name)

Typically you can find the component group name on the brake levers, etc.

A WAG at new bike costs are $500 for a Deore bike up to >$2500 for an XTR bike with $500-1000 steps in between. They may also have some lower end component groups below Deore? I don't remember?

But asking at a bike shope is probably the best way.

IRRC Trek now owns the Fisher brand.

Hey Dude, What model is it?....My son has a Tassajara...GF was bought by Trek in 94 and made in Wisconsin when I bought it in 1997 ($600), Gary (originator of MB) is still involved in the company and still biking.

ok, here comes the techie from out of the sweat.

um, maybe not. that is to say, while better components might bring a higher price, by no means can you value a bike based on individual components. if that was the case, my $1800 bike would likely have cost $2500. and since my components (even the hayes hydraulic disc breaks) are now 5 years old, component pricing would be even less relevant because what you can buy now is probably way more cool. just imagine the price if you bought your car not as a whole but in pieces to be assembled.

just like after six years a bmw 700 series is worth about the same as a 300 series and after five years my stang gt will be worth about as much as a v6, that xtr will be as valuable as an lx, if that. and if the previously considered better components are now more pricey to fix than the previously considered cheaper ones, the so-called better might even be now worth less.
