My last fill-up (Friday) was 18 Gallons @ $2.85 a gallon (Grocery store discounts ($.20 a gallon for each $50.00 spent on food-I had a $.40 a gallon for the $100 I spent on food over the month) and a PENFED VISA Card for another $.15 a gallon - Still the bill was a tad North of $50.

The grocery store here does the same thing - 10 cent discount per $100/groceries up to 30 gallons - so I have taken to bringing four 5-gallon gas cans to get the whole 30 gallons. Spent $101.97 at $3.39/gallon last time.

Drove home and parked the truck.

Why not sell / junk it?

It's easy to rent a truck or minivan when you actually need to haul a lot of stuff. And a small car is much more efficient and economical for long trips.

I would sell it but I paid cash for it and right now the resale value on it is not good. We have a herd of kids that fit well into the 6 passenger truck and on the road it gets about 22-24 miles a gallon. We use the truck for school trips and activities which sometimes are 2 to 3 times a week depending on the season.

We live out in the middle of nowhere and renting a truck is just not an option.

What I have done is buy a small old VW Bug to run around in town. It runs great and it is top mechanical condition.

My Canadian Oil Gas and pipeline stocks have eased the burden somewhat.

I worked an extra two days this week sub teaching at 90 dollars for 4 hours of work. 180 minus taxes so I have an additional 155 for gasoline. Hey higher price work a bit more.

I predict that won't be a problem much longer.

Fillup for a 1999 Chevy Tahoe today (about 400-450 miles around town since last fillup):
$111.87 (30 gallons into a 32 gal tank, at 3.729 a gallon )

Fillup for the new Prius (about 380 miles since last fillup):
$31.32 (8.4 gal into a 9.5 gal tank, same price.)

Guess which vehicle won't be being driven very much?

Here in San Diego, it's $3.89 for the cheap stuff, I've seen 87 being sold for as high as $4.09 some stations. But it'll take a sustained high price to really change vehicle preferences. Everybody talks about trading in the gas guzzling SUV until they see the resale value has plummeted.

See the market works itself out nicely.

I last filled up on March 19 and I'm down to half a tank today.

Since the first half tank is the biggest half I'll probably make it another 15-20 days before the next fillup. That would be 45-50 days on 21 gallons in my gas guzzler F150. I gotta start cutting back.

W/o the commute to w***, I've using about a tank per month, which is 20-22g (24g tank), costing around $70 for a fillup. Don't really drive much, but have been compelled to attend some familial functions that were out of town.

When the truck gets a little older, say 2-3 more years, I'll replace it as a daily driver with a gas miser. May keep the truck for "truck" purposes, but then again maybe not...

Some of you are putting in your cars what I spend a month on my motorcycle. And it's big and has relatively bad gas mileage compared to smaller ones.

$3.66 x ~3.2/gallons per fill up = $11.7 x 7 fill ups/month = $81.9

Avg. 40-60 mph @ 50-80 mph.

Seems like motorcycles and scooters would be preferred over hybrid cars, especially if it's just to work and back, or you're out doing minor errands, or to the beach or whatever.

In West Texas people are buying small electric scooters to get around. They use them to go to the grocery store, to the post office, to go to work and just to have fun.

Right now quite a few people are buying them but it remains to be seen if this current trend will continue.

The gas here is $3.41 a gallon and the last time (a few months ago) I got some butane it was at about $2.69 a gallon.

For perhaps once a month it'd be "easy" to rent a truck, but there's a lot to be said for having it right in the garage. That's worth something. To rent one involves driving somewhere else, where a truck may or may not be available when I want it, filling out paperwork, bringing it back, etc., and half the day is shot before I actually get useful time out of it. And we use the truck capabilities a lot more often than that.

Besides, my GMC Sierra is a bit over 5 years old, it's in pristine condition, and now would be about the worst possible time to sell it. And then I wouldn't have a truck anymore.

Nope, the original plan was to keep it 20 years and I'm sticking to it. The longer I keep it the less the amortized cost is.

If the government really wants to help us out, they'd give us a tax-credit or something for the high price of all this cable tv.

I wonder what they're paying in Venezuela for their cable?

And while the prius would be badly crumpled, the motorcycle/scooter would be just one big grease stain. No thanks.

Oil sets new record above $118 a barrel - Oil & energy - MSNBC.com

The price for a barrel of oil hit $118 + today how much higher do you think it will go?

Will we ever see long gas lines again like in the 1970's?
