They used to say, in Australia, that an Australian 'aristocrat' was someone who could trace his ancestry back to his father.

Ah, genealogy. How else would I have discovered that my wife and I are cousins?

Yes, it's true. We are cousins. We are kin.

Of course, we're very distant, being 12th cousins tracing common ancestry to Francis Cooke of the Mayflower. Still, we joke that we decided not to have kids because we were cousins and wanted to avoid inbreeding.

I have tried to research my family tree but it's very difficult. Both my paternal and maternal grandparents were immigrants. Paternal Grandparents from southern Germany and maternal Grandparents were part of the Germans from Russia group. Maternal Grandparents birth city (Balzar, Russia) no longer exists. My Grandfather always said one of his uncles was a bodyguard to Czar Nicholas and was killed during the revolution. I would love to find out more but the whole process of trying to get information from overseas is more work than I want to put into it.

Indeed, verified by DNA (although the records were pretty good in and of themselves), and now my real last name is out there.
